As the world celebrates the 20th anniversary of Amy Winehouse's iconic album 'Back to Black', the Independent delves into the lesser-known details surrounding its cover art. The album, which catapulted Winehouse to mainstream success and earned her five Grammy Awards in one night, remains a cultural touchstone. The cover, featuring Winehouse in a simple yet striking pose against a blackboard-painted cupboard, was not initially intended for the album sleeve. Photographer Mischa Richter recalls the spontaneous nature of the shoot, which took place at his home in Kensal Rise, with no studio lights or large crew. Winehouse, who was self-conscious during the session, had requested a friend to stand near the camera for comfort, but Richter declined. The final image, chosen by the label, captures Winehouse's vulnerability and authenticity, qualities that defined her artistry. The article also highlights the role of Winehouse's first stylist, Lou Wood, who accompanied her on shopping trips for outfits, often borrowing designer pieces. Wood recalls Winehouse's warmth and humanity, particularly her concern for Wood's young son during the shoot. The album's legacy is further underscored by its enduring impact: it was the bestselling album of its year, influenced artists like Prince and Ronnie Spector, and remains a benchmark for 21st-century music. Despite the album's success, Winehouse's personal struggles became increasingly apparent, leading Wood to stop styling her midway through promotion. Today, Wood reflects on Winehouse not as an icon but as a friend and talented artist whose life was tragically cut short. The anniversary celebrations, including a BBC concert at Camden's Roundhouse, serve as a reminder of Winehouse's lasting influence on music and culture.

A previously unpublished interview with Amy Winehouse, conducted by The Sunday Times in May 2007, has resurfaced after nearly two decades. The interview, held at the Mondrian Hotel in Los Angeles just days after her marriage to Blake Fielder-Civil, was shelved by journalist Ariel Leve and only recently completed and published. At age 23, Winehouse discussed her fears about not making a lasting impact, stating, "The thought of dying without ever making my mark, that was my biggest fear." She reflected on her early discovery at a London jazz club at age 16 and whether she could handle obscurity without success. Winehouse expressed pride in her album 'Back To Black,' which had become a commercial success, selling over a million copies in the UK and achieving gold certification in the US. She also shared personal insights about her marriage, describing Fielder-Civil as "the love of my life" and recalling their impulsive decision to marry in Miami. Winehouse admitted to feeling insecure about her intelligence, saying, "I’m quite thick," to which Fielder-Civil responded, "If you’re thick, then I’m a fucking idiot for marrying you." The interview also touches on her contentment with domestic life, stating she was "happiest when I’m cleaning my house and cooking for my friends." The publication of this interview coincides with the 20th-anniversary edition of 'Back To Black,' set for release later this month, featuring unreleased demos and rare B-sides. The album, which sold over 25 million copies worldwide and earned Winehouse five Grammy Awards in 2007, remains a landmark in her career. Winehouse died in 2011 at age 27 from an alcohol overdose, two years after her separation from Fielder-Civil. The interview offers a poignant glimpse into her thoughts on fame, legacy, and personal happiness during a pivotal moment in her life.
