Pipworm & Reedburm #pixelart

Rather than using natural materials, these bagworms built their casings with discarded reed instruments. The anatomy also adopted the musical capabilities, which they utilize to scare off predators. When synchronized, their song can be heard from miles away.

If you're a Pokemon fan, Bagworms are the basis for Burmy and its evolutionary line. Male Bagworms develop into moths like Mothim, female Bagworms remain in their cocoons and turn them into winter egg nurseries like Wormadam.

didn't need to notice bagworms to know this particular urban roadside tree has had a rough go lately

bsky.app/profile/skwi...
based on the number of trees down on my block, still having power is just a miracle at this point

the huge towering ancient sycamores and oaks took those 80+ mph gusts like champs, but the smaller roadside plantings were ripped up at the roots

You can tell what the bagworms in your area like to eat because they'll usually cover their cocoons in the dried debris of whatever host plant they've been feasting on.

Wahey! I only learnt about bagworms a few months ago, and I immediately fell in love with them. I hope you do too
The Heather Bagworm Pachythelia villosella larva in its 3 cm long case. Rare in UK on heathland in Hampshire & Dorset. When climbing it has the amazing ability to construct a silk ladder! It will pupate on a tree trunk so probably uses this ability to find a suitable spot. Thanks to Lucie Aggas.

This is the commonest of the British bagworms (Psychidae). You can find them on gravestones in our local cemeteries, but if you have an old garden fence it's probably there too. Most bagworms have winged males & wingless females - but the females of this species are parthenigenetic

Bro, what species IS it? All of the bagworms I see around here use multiple little pieces to construct their homes. I already let this guy go back where I found it.

Bagworms on Trees and Shrubs
Needled evergreens are the preferred host of bagworms but don't be surprised to see the bags on the branches of shade trees.
