Scuffle and chaos mar MQM-P meeting as two groups clash at party's office in Karachi's Bahadurabad
KARACHI: At least four people were injured as a scuffle and chaos marred a meeting of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) at the party’s headquarters in Bahadurabad near Char Minar on Sunday evening. According to party officials, the clash broke out between supporters of two rival groups within the party. A police officer, requesting anonymity, told _Dawn_ that police were present at the scene and the situation was under control. He added that, so far, no one had approached the New Town police to lodge a complaint. The official added that police contingents had rushed to the scene to prevent the situation from deteriorating further. Another police official told _Dawn_ that at around 7:20pm, an MQM-P meeting was underway at the party’s temporary headquarters in Bahadurabad, where senior leaders were present. He said the situation escalated after Dr Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui left the meeting, with a scuffle breaking out between workers belonging to groups led by Anis Qaimkhani and Mustafa Kamal, and those supporting Dr Siddiqui and Aminul Haque. It was not clear what led to the scuffle between the two groups. According to the official, workers from the Qaimkhani group allegedly assaulted members of the Siddiqui group and forcibly removed them from the party’s headquarters. Later, Siddiqui group workers gathered at a nearby park. The official said heavy firing was also reported from inside the party headquarters, causing fear and panic in the area. One person, identified as Amir Ali, 40, sustained a bullet injury and was shifted to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital. Later, Farooq Sattar, Ali Khursheedi and Haque arrived at the park and asked the workers to come for a press conference, which did not take place, the police officer added. At around 10pm, the leaders left the party headquarters and the workers also dispersed. Police remained present at the site, but no arrests were made, the official added. Meanwhile, police surgeon Dr Summaiya Syed said one person with a firearm injury and three others injured by sticks and stones were brought to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital from Bahadurabad. She added that the person with the firearm injury, who had wounds on his arm and chest, was later shifted to a private hospital. In a post on X, Sindh government spokesperson Sadia Javed said: “They set out to divide Sindh, but failed to keep their own house in order.” > “Those who sought to divide others have themselves splintered into factions today. The people have once again given a fitting response to those who pursued the politics of hatred against Sindh’s unity,” Javed said. “Every dream of dividing Sindh was buried before, and it has been buried once again today. Sindh was united, Sindh is united and Sindh will remain united.”

150 people rescued after fire erupts in high-rise building in Karachi
KARACHI: Around 150 people, including elderly people and children, were rescued after a fire erupted in a high-rise building near Karachi’s Baloch Colony on Thursday, according to police and rescue services officials. Bahadurabad Station House Officer Mohammed Nawaz told _Dawn_ that the fire broke out in the Index Palace in Sharifabad, near the Baloch Colony bridge. Rescue 1122 spokesperson Hassaanul Haseeb Khan, meanwhile, told _Dawn_ that it was an eight-storey building with two basements, where vehicles were parked. “The blaze took place inside the parking space, ostensibly due to some short circuit failure in a parked car,” he said. “Since the high-rise building had no ventilation, smoke spread and engulfed the building,” he said. Though the fire only spread up to the first floor, smoke engulfed the whole building, spreading fear and panic among the residents. Khan said two rescue teams were on site, with one engaged in rescue operations. “With the help of ladders, residents from three floors — with four flats on each floor — were rescued,” he said. Later, firefighters entered the building and safely rescued people, including the elderly, women and children, from the upper floors. “Two people who had gone to the rooftop of the building were rescued with the help of a snorkel,” Khan added. “With the timely action of the rescue team, around 150 persons were rescued safely,” he said. The spokesperson said Rescue 1122’s command and control system received information about the fire erupting in the basement around 5:47am, with firefighters reaching the scene at 6am. Initially, they were informed that fire had erupted where the generator was kept in case of power failure; however, it later transpired that the fire erupted in a car due to a short circuit, which spread and engulfed other parked vehicles. Khan said two cars were destroyed, while a few others were damaged. The blaze was brought under control at 8:30am, while cooling work continued till 10am. The Rescue 1122 spokesperson further said that the building had no fire safety system in the basement, and that mainly members of the Bohra community resided in the building. Meanwhile, electricity distribution company K-Electric (KE) in a statement said that its staffers displayed remarkable bravery and helped save at least 25 individuals from the fire. “KE teams responded promptly after the fire incident was notified, and the feeder supplying electricity to the affected area was isolated in line with the company’s safety protocols,” the statement read. “This timely action was taken to eliminate any potential electrical hazard and to ensure the safety of residents and surrounding infrastructure.” Sadia Dada, the chief distribution and marketing communications officer at KE, was quoted as saying: “We know how to go above and beyond our mandate for the betterment and safety of Karachi and its people. I laud my staff that not only followed safety protocols but also helped save lives.”

MQM seeks federal govt intervention in Sindh

KARACHI: The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM-P) on Tuesday urged the federal government to “intervene” in Sindh’s affairs and appoint an arbitrator, along with a high-level judicial commission, to examine supposed administrative and security failures, particularly in Karachi.

Addressing a press conference, senior leader MQM-P Dr Farooq Sattar, along with Haider Abbas Rizvi at the party’s Bahadurabad headquarters, said that Sindh’s current system of governance was “oppressive and feudal” and had pushed the province to the brink of collapse.

He said Karachi, despite being the country’s economic hub, continued to be deprived of its constitutional and administrative rights. He demanded the formation of a judicial commission to investigate the recent Gul Plaza blaze and assess broader governance issues in the province.

“I urge the federal government and the relevant state institutions to intervene in Sindh’s affairs, act as an arbitrator in Karachi’s matters, and constitute a high-level judicial commission to review administrative failures and the worsening law and order situation in the province,” he said.

Dr Sattar expressed grave concern over the withdrawal of security for MQM-P leaders. He said police headquarters had informed the party that security cover had been removed, creating serious risks.

“After media reports, there were claims that some security arrangements would be restored, but the ground reality remains alarming,” he said, warning that if the Sindh government failed to provide security, the ruling ally would demand protection from the Islamabad police.

He praised Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir, stating that their efforts had restored the dignity of Pakistan’s green passport and improved the country’s standing at the international level.

“Their hard work and sacrifices should not be undermined by the incompetence of the Sindh government,” he said.

Criticising the PPP leadership, Dr Sattar urged PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari to demonstrate sincerity towards Karachi by ensuring the implementation of Article 140-A of the Constitution, which mandates the devolution of powers to local governments. He said the 18th Constitutional Amendment was meant for all provinces, not for the continuation of “one-family rule”.

Dr Sattar warned that continued neglect of Karachi’s issues could further aggravate the situation in the city.

“We were mocked when we raised Sindh’s concerns earlier, but today the consequences are visible,” he said, adding that it was time for serious and practical decisions rather than political slogans.

The press conference was also attended by MQM-P leaders Shabbir Qaimkhani, Arshad Vohra, as well as members of the National Assembly and Sindh Assembly.

Meanwhile, Sindh Home Minister Ziaul Hassan denied the MQM-P claims about the withdrawal of security for the party leaders and called it “baseless”.

In a statement, he said that no decision has been taken to withdraw security for the MQM-P leaders.

“Both senior leaders of the party, Mustafa Kamal and Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui, are currently in Islamabad,” he said. “There’s no directive from the government regarding the removal of security from any political figure.”

Published in Dawn, January 28th, 2026

Muttahida groups in war of words over Dr Imran Farooq’s murder
KARACHI: A war of words erupted between two factions of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement on Sunday after Federal Health Minister Mustafa Kamal once again blamed party founder Altaf Hussain for being involved in the 2010 murder of senior party leader Dr Imran Farooq in London. Speaking at a press conference at a park adjacent to the party’s Bahadurabad headquarters, Mr Kamal said if Mr Hussain “truly considers himself innocent, he should approach a London court and file a petition for a transparent investigation into the brutal murder of Dr Imran Farooq”. It may be noted that in 2020 an Islamabad anti-terrorism court had sentenced three men — Syed Mohsin Ali, Moazzam Ali and Khalid Shamim — to life imprisonment and declared Mr Hussain an absconder in the Imran Farooq murder case. The MQM-P leader’s presser came a day after the burial of Dr Imran Farooq’s widow Shumaila, who died a couple of days ago in London. Mr Kamal, as well as leaders of MQM factions, attended the funeral and expressed their condolence with her two sons and other family members. During his press conference, Mr Kamal lost his cool and used foul language against Mr Hussain. He also alleged donations were collected from around the world in the name of sending Shumaila’s body to Pakistan. Lamenting that Dr Imran Farooq’s children “are being dragged onto social media and exploited for political purposes”, Mr Kamal advised them to stay away from Mr Hussain and his faction. **MQM-L responds** Meanwhile, the MQM-L condemned Mr Kamal’s press conference and challenged him to prove his allegations. Senior London-based leader Mustafa Azizabadi told an online media briefing that “Kamal’s press conference is an extremely disgraceful attempt to drag the innocent children of Dr Imran Farooq”. He condemned use of foul language by Mr Kamal. He also played video clips showing Dr Imran Farooq’s late father telling a TV host that the killers of his son were with Mr Kamal. Mr Azizabadi said his party was not making allegations against anyone, but that people should decide for themselves after watching Imran Farooq’s father’s video. _Published in Dawn, December 29th, 2025_

PPP seeks Muttahida’s support for Senate by-election
KARACHI: A delegation of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) called on the leadership of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) on Sunday to formally seek their support for Waqar Mehdi, its nominee for the Senate by-election to be held on May 5 in Sindh Assembly. Senior PPP leaders Nasir Shah, Saeed Ghani, Waqar Mehdi, Sohail Siyal and others arrived at the temporary headquarters of the MQM-P in Bahadurabad. During the meeting, both sides discussed political cooperation, urban development issues in Karachi and future coordination between the two parties. The session was marked by an atmosphere of goodwill with leaders on both sides recognising the importance of continued dialogue. > Nasir Shah-led delegation visits MQM-P headquarters Later, speaking to the media after the meeting, PPP’s Nasir Shah confirmed that the party leadership had sought support for Mr Mehdi for the Senate seat that fell vacant after the death of senior PPP leader Taj Haider. “We are thankful to MQM for their cooperation, especially on the canal issue,” he said. “We are hopeful that MQM will support our candidate in the upcoming by-election.” MQM-P leader Dr Farooq Sattar emphasised the need for continued political engagement. “Politics is all about dialogue. PPP is our ally in the federal government, and we were also partners during the PDM-led government,” he said. “There should be flexibility in our approach, and we must move discussions forward,” he said. Dr Sattar also highlighted the need to revisit the past agreements between the PPP and the MQM. He stressed the importance of continued informal dialogue on key issues such as water scarcity, constitutional amendments and the local government act. “Karachi’s issues require collective focus, and we must sit together regularly to find solutions,” he said. He told reporters that the MQM-P filed nominations of Nighat Shakeel and Mujahid Baig for the Senate by-election. “We have received a formal request from the PPP. Our central committee, under the leadership of Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui, will deliberate and finalise this matter,” he said. To a question, Nasir Shah said: “If the decision regarding the six canals project on the Indus River is not reversed at the May 2 meeting of the Council of Common Interests (CCI), the PPP will consider parting ways with the federal government.” “We are not in the coalition with the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz by choice, but out of necessity for the sake of Pakistan. The canals issue is highly sensitive and that the party cannot back down on this matter,” he said. He reiterated that PPP had always advocated for development and cooperation. He acknowledged the visible progress in development work. He also thanked MQM-P leader Mustafa Kamal for acknowledging that Karachi received federal funding during Asif Ali Zardari’s tenure. “This meeting is a gesture of goodwill and a step toward strengthening ties between our two parties,” he said. _Published in Dawn, April 28th, 2025_

MQM-P plays down internal rifts
KARACHI: Internal rifts within the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan came under the public spotlight when two groups staged a protest and a counter protest against each other at its temporary headquarters in Bahadurabad. However, the MQM-P tried to play down the incident and said in a statement on Sunday that certain elements were exaggerating on social media “the matter only to create chaos”. Ever since the January 2023 merger of the Mustafa Kamal-led Pak Sarzameen Party with the Dr Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui-led MQM-P, the party has experienced a rollercoaster journey due to a constant struggle between different groups vying for control. The latest episode began on Saturday afternoon when a group of MQM-P workers, said to be loyalists of Mustafa Kamal and Anis Kaimkhani, stormed the Bahadurabad headquarters and allegedly misbehaved with some senior members there. > Party sees ‘planned conspiracy’ behind attempts to harm unity They sought an explanation to a recent decision of MQM-P chairman Dr Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui through which he not only assigned responsibilities to the members of his central committee but also made Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori the ‘caretaker’ of the party’s lawmakers in the Sindh Assembly. The situation became very intense when a number of MQM-P workers arrived at the Bahadurabad headquarters ostensibly to counter Kamal-Kaimkhani loyalists. However, a source said, a better sense prevailed as senior leader Iftikhar Alam instructed the protesting workers to leave the premises. Later, a group of people, including women and children, holding placards inscribed with slogans including ‘ _Khalid Maqbool humari red line hain_ ’ emerged at the Bahadurabad headquarters where they staged a protest against Mr Kamal and Mr Kaimkhani. Senior leader Mustafa Kamal told the media he had challenged the “forces of status quo”. About the protest by his loyalists and its footage, he explained what was seen in the footage inside the party headquarters was just a discussion by party workers as the party had given some responsibilities. He added that asking questions and chanting slogans was a democratic right. Regarding the counter protest, however, he said they should be thankful that the MQM-P headquarters was closed when the protesters arrived. **Closed-door meeting** Another MQM-P source told _Dawn_ that certain quarters made senior MQM-P leadership attend a closed-door meeting at a ‘safe house’ in the Karachi’s South district in a bid to remove their differences when they were informed about the protest against Mr Kamal and Mr Kaimkhani. As a result, the MQM-P released a statement and rejected reports of differences as “concocted and fabricated”. “Under a planned conspiracy, attempts are being made to harm the unity within the MQM,” it said, adding that unscrupulous elements wanted to pit MQM-P workers against each other. It also declared that the party leadership was united and asked party workers to remain united and not to fell prey to any propaganda. Also on Sunday, a meeting of MQM-P lawmakers was held at the party headquarters in Bahadurabad. The meeting was jointly chaired by Dr Farooq Sattar and Mr Kaimkhani to give a clear message of unity. _Published in Dawn, February 10th, 2025_
