I pronounced bath and half like bahth and hahf until I went to kindergarten and everybody made fun of me. My folks both had Boston accents.

You need to drop the Rs, put them back in the right places, Get the Es right (e.g. yes --> eeyuhsss, dance --> deeance rhymes with hands, etc), get some As right in some cases (bath --> bahth), get various words right (potatoes --> badaydas) and that just scratches the surface.

I guess I mean Bahth with a long a, like you’re saying! Tl;dr vowel sounds are very different in the North and the South, and although I don’t have a particularly strong Lancashire accent, my A’s are resolutely northern

I flit between ‘barth/bahth’ etc because my mum was posh southern but find I am becoming more northern. I love the change in my accent as I get more Teesside over the years (and genuinely adore my kids’ Teesside accents)

I’ve always found it humorous that the British pronounce Bath as bahth but pronounce pasta with a short a - like Shasta. I can never figure them out.

I can call Bath in Britain "Bahth" like it felt like the locals do. But Bath, NY, is like the tub here. I manage a tolerable R.P. I don't hear an R in it. Like some around here say warsh instead of wash. Barrth makes me think of the Simpsons. :)

I think it's short-a wrong, long-a right?
But I'm a northerner, I don't use a long-a much at all. So pahstah and tahco would sound as odd for me to say as bahth, pahth, mahths, cahstle...

This also includes one of my favorite British-isms of writing something like it has an R in it ("barth") but to an American ear it still sounds like bahth. This is probably the accent thing that trips me up the most w/ my cohost. I can't tell what word he's said 'cause I can't hear the R.
