as I've remarked before, Google is now considerably worse with this stuff than Baidu was in the 2010s, when it caused massive scandals and regulatory reform in China
"guestreservations dot com" is the worst site, they make a subdomain for every hotel so it's like name-of-hotel[.]guestreservations[.]com and they buy google ads so that they come up as the first result when you search for that hotel's name, and you mistakenly think it's the hotel's official website

it's really noticeable to me that Google search now looks like Baidu search of a decade ago, which caused massive scandals and regulatory change in China.
I guarantee that there will be four scam websites sitting in the four paid ad slots at the top of Google search, and Google will take no action to stop this.

as I've remarked before, remarkable that the practices that caused a massive scandal for Baidu in China are business-as-usual for Google now.
This is a great example of why I don't see anything surprising in Google's decision to promote AI in search results. Google has long allowed companies to buy their way to the top of search results rather than just telling you how to find what you're obviously looking for.
As for me, I use Bing.

it's fun how far you have to scroll down in the google results for "passport renewal" to get the actual .gov site.

If we over regulate, then we will be looking at Chinese companies fighting to be the dominant platform.
China is doing all they can to supplant our lead. If you think dealing with these 5 comps is bad, imagine if Tik Tok, Alibaba, Baidu, Huawei replaced Google,FB,Amazon/Apple as leaders

I completely get it. They have shareholders, employees, and customers to satisfy. They can’t afford to fall behind even at the whims of a capricious criminal president. Maybe if tech was adequately regulated this would be less of an issue

while it's pleasing to see that my many letters denouncing podcasters to the authorities have not gone unnoticed, this is primarily directed at bad health advice, a recurring problem that the Chinese government has taken pretty seriously since the Baidu search scandal years ago.
