El 22 de mayo de 2026, las primeras 50 posiciones de la clasificación mundial de temperaturas de la plataforma AQI.in correspondían a localidades de India, encabezadas aquella mañana por Balangir, en el estado oriental de Odisha, con unos 45 grados. No era la primera vez que ocurría durante ese año. El 27 de abril, otro registro de la misma plataforma ya había situado a 50 localidades indias al frente de su listado mundial. El episodio coincidió con una intensa ola de calor sobre el norte y el centro del país. Pocos días después, el Departamento Meteorológico de India, conocido por sus siglas en inglés como IMD, confirmó que la ciudad de Banda había alcanzado una máxima de 47,6 grados. El dato resulta tan llamativo como inquietante. Sin embargo, necesita una precisión: no significa que esas fueran las ciudades más calurosas del mundo durante todo el año, sino que ocuparon las primeras posiciones de una clasificación en tiempo real durante una jornada concreta. Además, se trata del ranking de una plataforma privada, condicionado por las estaciones meteorológicas y las localidades incluidas en su sistema. La dimensión de la crisis, no obstante, va mucho más allá de una clasificación. Durante la primavera de 2026, amplias regiones de India soportaron temperaturas superiores a los 45 grados, con episodios que rozaron los 50. El 20 de mayo, el IMD registró en Banda una máxima de 48,2 grados, mientras varias zonas del norte permanecían bajo avisos por ola de calor. Un ranking de temperaturas que esconde una crisis humana Los termómetros pueden marcar la misma temperatura para toda una ciudad, pero sus habitantes no sufren el mismo calor. Para una parte de la población, una ola extrema significa permanecer en una vivienda climatizada, modificar el horario de trabajo o evitar los desplazamientos durante las horas centrales del día. Para millones de indios supone continuar trabajando en el campo, la construcción, la limpieza, el transporte o la venta ambulante bajo temperaturas potencialmente mortales. El calor afecta especialmente a quienes dependen del trabajo diario para comer. Detenerse, aunque sea durante unas horas, puede significar perder el salario de toda la jornada. La posibilidad de protegerse se convierte así en un privilegio económico. El reportaje de The Guardian que ha puesto rostro a esta emergencia relata las muertes de varios trabajadores expuestos a temperaturas extremas. Una de las víctimas fue Palli Mahalaxmi, una jornalera de 50 años que falleció después de trabajar bajo el sol en Andhra Pradesh, dentro de un programa público de empleo rural. Mahalaxmi desarrolló síntomas compatibles con un golpe de calor después de una jornada en la que habría trabajado con temperaturas superiores a los 40 grados, sin suficientes zonas de sombra ni acceso adecuado al agua.
