Carl Ballantine
September 27, 1917 – November 3, 2009
American magician, comedian and actor. Billing himself as "The Great Ballantine"

His vaudeville-style comedy routine involved transparent or incompetent stage magic tricks, which tended to flop and go "hilariously awry"

From the Encyclopedia of Science Fiction, Fourth Edition:

"US paperback imprint, founded 1977, a subsidiary of Ballantine Books, itself a part of Random House. The imprint was named by then-Ballantine editor Judy-Lynn del Rey for her husband Lester del Rey"

There's also a difference between Random House the imprint, Random House the group (which includes, besides the RH imprint, Modern Library, Ballantine, Dial, Bantam, One World, Hogarth, etc., etc.), and Random House the onetime corporation that is now Penguin Random House.

It can be confusing.

Yes. I just re-read with that set. I can’t get the images of the Michael Herring Ballantine covers out of my head though.

It also pleases me that the books still bear the copy line "The enchanting prelude to The Lord of the Rings," which if I'm not mistaken is exclusively a Ballantine thing.

(But I've already been wrong once tonight about our history, so I'm not overstepping.)

A fun thing for me was that I was also then part of Ballantine, which publishes the Lord of the Rings mass markets, which I'd bought two or three times (I used to wear them out) in my teens, when they were 95 cents a pop.

Autocorrect wrote "ballantine" and I am sure it's cleverer than what I wrote.

WHO CENSORED ROGER RABBIT? – a mystery novel by Gary K. Wolf (1981), later adapted into the film Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988).

This cover image depicts Wolf as the protagonist Eddie Valiant, as did the cover of the first edition of the book. #BookWormSat

"Autism didn't exist until the 90s" here's a book published by Ballantine, in 1975, that's everything known about the world of Star Trek. Fully reverse engineered from syndicated reruns on fuzzy UHF before consumer VCRs were a thing that existed. Alt text will be spotty; it's mostly just blueprints.
