Welp. Apple snuck something dirty in our phones last night.

Settings > Apps > (pick an app) > Siri > Learn From this App

TOGGLE OFF.

You have to go through each app. My garage app, my BANKING APPS, others had that turned on automatically. 😡

I don’t trust phone apps for banking, taxes, or tickets. Those are desktop activities.

Impacting lots of banking and other apps as well…
there’s a major AWS outage going on right now that’s taken down Fortnite, Alexa, Snapchat, Perplexity, Roblox, and lots more of the internet. US-EAST-1 is down and impacting a lot of services that rely on AWS www.theverge.com/news/802486/...

I would never cross that border with a phone with any important apps.

No banking
Not my main email
No socials
And most importantly, no password apps.

I hope this will make everything make sense for the Europeans: Americans haven’t really updated like, any of our infrastructure since the Cold War ended. Like, none of it.

Bridges: falling down
Public transit: lol
Banking: 3d party apps that could take all your money at any moment fill vital needs
I love how all the Europeans are like “wait wait but how do you do account safety” and we’re all like, “same way we do gun safety: thoughts, prayers, and hoping we avoid the line of fire.”
(Meanwhile, people not in the US are like: wait a second, people can use the number they use to pay you to just take money out of your account?

Yes. Yes.)

Paid off the mortgage this morning. Did it on the banking app on my phone lying in bed. Totally deflating. No triumphant walk into the bank, no looks of mild jealousy from the teller. No elation. Nothing. Got up, had a dump. Apps are sucking the joy out of life.

Banking apps that don’t include the decimal spots automatically are the work of the devil

Imagine having $900 million, scrolling through your banking apps in a cold sweat and going, "No, this just isn't enough. I need more."

also last item reminding me of when I complained about a problem with getting my landlord a rent check and received condescending replies about banking apps from Europeans for an entire week

lol as soon as banking apps started having reward wheels it was over but this is like over^2

Yes. It's ageist and ableist, too. My old eyes make it hard and tedious for me to navigate phone apps. I don't really care for most of the crap corporate apps offer. But when banking and government services try to push me onto apps? It's a big problem.
People should not be forced to buy a $600+ piece of technology in order to function at a bare minimum level in society.

just be glad I don't code banking apps

This drive towards apps is also, in addition to being a pain in the arse, an equity issue.

If we make it impossible to participate in things as diverse as online banking, taxi bookings, restaurant reservations, emergency information, and bus schedules, we are forcing people to buy smart phones.
July 31, 2024 at 12:36 AM
Oh forgot to mention this last night: those third party apps that can take all your money, that literally wouldn't need to exist if we had the banking that Europeans had on the same schedule?

That is how Peter Thiel and Elon Musk got their initial pile of money.
I hope this will make everything make sense for the Europeans: Americans haven’t really updated like, any of our infrastructure since the Cold War ended. Like, none of it.

This disrupted roughly 60 AWS services in the region, affecting cloud-dependent apps (e.g., banking, ride-hailing like Careem, payments, e-commerce like Noon/Talabat). -AWS Statement

Reminder: the Federal Reserve has opened a proposal for public comment on "reputation risk" discrimination in banking.
Public comments have been surging, and the new FTC action shows this issue is getting harder to ignore. Keep the pressure on.

Banking increasingly outsourcing marketing for consumer deposits to apps that build on top of a banking as a service platform is fucking weird.
