There's also Stana Nenadic's case-study of the letters of a specific Highland family, the Campbells of Barcaldine (late 17/e.19thC); they were Gaelic speakers but, like most native speakers after c.1600, wrote in English. It also suggests that they kept very few women's letters, only the men's.

I'm not sure who can access this, but it may be of interest (expecially if you want to escape from everyday issues for a while)

I've just been watching the Episode about Barcaldine

Barcaldine is in Central Queensland, and has a population of about 1,500.

Interesting flight on the arrivals board at MCY. It does continue onto Emerald, so I wonder if you can book on the BNE-MCY leg only.

It's a 1hr 15 drive by car. At 87km it would be shorter than my previous record of 106km for Barcaldine to Longreach.

Yes. I think the shearers in Barcaldine would have agreed more readily than most Labor parliamentarians these days, even those who benefited from free tertiary ed. It's a measure of the adherence to neoliberal orthodoxy in Labor, these Uni fees.
July 14, 2025 at 1:49 AM
Yes but if you don't charge fees for degrees then someone accrues a private benefit at no personal cost. Labor abhors such privilege. Images: Tree Of Knowledge, Barcaldine, now and then.
July 14, 2025 at 1:30 AM
Oof.

The Barcaldine Tree is a nursery rhyme to most members today I would estimate.
Most current ALP MPs probably think the ALP was formed by those who opposed the shearers striking in 1891.

That is a massive canvas !! Barcaldine & Blackall are good places to start IMO. You’ve already done a massive amount of research no doubt with Eureka.
From my limited knowledge, the miners at Eureka were multi cultural, Shearers not so. Jackie Howe, do you know his story ?

We saw FIVE castles and a tower over the weekend too! McCaig’s Tower, Dunollie Castle, Castle Stalker (aka Castle of Aaargh from Monty Python and the Holy Grail!), Barcaldine Castle, Dunstaffnage Castle, and Kilchurn Castle. We didn't go inside any castles since they're all closed until spring.

If you're into ceramic, there's a brilliant studio & shop somewhere between Oban & Barcaldine, I can't remember the names but I have several pieces from there. There are some pretty walks from Barcaldine up to the reservoir through managed woodland, too.

After a 4 hour drive we’ve arrived in Barcaldine near Oban. We’ve explored the area many times so will be chilling out until Sunday when we move over to Ardnamurchan to stay in the airstream which inspired mybook.to/DarkHighlandSkies
