Prepping for Samhain has been enjoyable. Tomorrow, I bake a barmbrack and make colcannon for part of my dumb dinner (we eat in silence). 🎃🕯🧹 I'm looking forward to this.

A little Halloween/Samhain celebration. Candy, barmbrack, turnip jack-o-lantern, and a little beverage for later around the bonfire. #halloween #samhain #jackolantern #trickortreat

In Ireland, Halloween fruitcake was to be used for fortune-telling. A fruitcake called barmbrack was baked with various objects inside for divination. The item found in your slice of barmbrack would predict your future: a ring meant marriage, while a coin signified wealth.

Our Samhain barmbrack turned out great. Made an altar to ancestors while the veil bw worlds is thin. Sang our usual Irish ballad w my kiddo as their lullaby.
Slowly rebuilding knowledge & tradition lost over generations. Reaching back to the roots a little more each year. #halloween

Wait a sec, is this barmbrack?
A light yeasted fruitcake I made in December 2020 from an old recipe (entitled “light fruitcake”.)

It feels like we just left September and yet tomorrow is the Big Day already 😱🫠

Soul Cakes are the big task today. Baked my Barmbrack yesterday (and impromptu banana bread Wednesday). Oh, and vacuum. And maybe laundry.

The barmbrack came out nicely. Really easy to make.

My daughter got the sixpence, my ex-husband got the stick, and I got the ring.

I don’t want the ring. 😅

Halloween is deeply rooted in ancient Irish traditions, and nothing brings those customs to life quite like the festive food.

Yes. We did the same for bonfires in the seventies and went door-to-door in false faces and homemade witch or ghost costumes, collecting money mostly (no such thing as "trick or treat").
We dunked for apples and had barmbrack with a ring, coin, and twig.
I grew up in Ireland the same period, and remember being surprised that Halloween wasn’t that big a deal in the UK, but then they had Guy Fawkes and we didn’t. As teenagers, we collected, scavenged and stole materials to build a bigger Halloween bonfire than rival housing estates.
I don't recall ever going trick-or-treating when I was a kid (in the UK in the 1970s/80s). Getting dressed up and going door-to-door was more of an American thing, right? Or is this just me?

W Irlandii Halloween smakuje szczęściem. Barmbrack, tradycyjne ciasto owocowe, piecze się z ukrytymi przedmiotami, które mają przepowiedzieć nadchodzący rok: moneta oznacza bogactwo, pierścionek ślub, a groszek stanu wolnego.

Przepis przygotowała Aoife White.

Barmbrack - fruitcake with a hidden "treat" like a coin, a ring, or something else small and solid that you might choke on.

When I was a kid Mum made barmbreac (speckled laof) with coins so whoever got the coin in their slice would have good luck. Me and my siblings would argue but my Mum slipped in extra coins saying the fairies were feeling generous this halloween. Ever the peacemaker.
