Diary of a Middle Aged Karateka:
Kata (forms) are relatively easy to memorise, but difficult to master.
Even the simplest, shortest beginner kata needs to be regularly refined.
This weekend, I've chosen Bassai Dai for refinement.
Here's a video of Hirokazu Kanazawa doing it right.

I'm going to share this as good personal news, because *looks at the world*.
I have today, for the first time, completed Bassai Dai, a karate kata.
Yes, it's a small thing, but it's a thing. I've been learning it a few moves at a time on my lunch breaks.

I have Kanku Dai down.
So, along with Bassai Dai, I've got two of the three Black Belt Kata required in my dojo.
Next is Jion.

My shotokan sensei asked me point blank “which technique did you use and did it fail,” and you bet your ass I was doing Bassai Dai after every class. I have Kill Bill flashbacks when people mention that kata.

Yesterday was essentially an endurance test for me, but now that I've rested, details are coming back to me.
The kata we practised was Bassai Sho, one that I neither know nor particularly care for. This was the most difficult part of the day for me because I don't learn kata well under pressure.
