My own personal favorite is the Giant Isopod (Bathynomus giganteus), marine cousins to the roly-poly or pillbug, that live in the inky depths of the bathyal zone: up to 2,140 meters (7,000 feet) below the surface.

My own personal favorite is the Giant Isopod (Bathynomus giganteus), marine cousins to the roly-poly or pillbug, that live in the inky depths of the bathyal zone: up to 2,140 meters (7,000 feet) below the surface.

Gigantism may be a response to being so far away from photosynthesizing carbon fixation. Giant isopods can live for years without food after gorging themselves.
'Giants' have higher efficiency metabolism and are better able to survive periods of low food availability.

They lay eggs, but have special scale structures that form a 'marsupium' pouch where the eggs incubate before emerging as very tiny versions of the adults
The triangular eyes are made of thousands of individual facets with membranes (tapetum lucidum) that amplify the near-darkness of their home.
