Today marks the 19th day of Mzia Amaghlobeli's hunger strike. Protesters in her native Batumi spent last night in tents, demanding her immediate release, recognition as a victim, and the dismissal of Batumi’s police chief, Irakli Dgebuadze, who orchestrated her unlawful arrest.

Just moments after being released from jail, Batumi’s tireless flag bearer Temur Katamadze was re-arrested. Authorities claim he violated immigration laws.

Temur, a descendant of forcibly exiled Adjarians, has been fighting for 12 years for a Georgian citizenship.

Judge Irma Togonidze sentenced brothers Lasha and Giorgi Gabaidze, detained on January 11 outside #Batumi’s main police station, to 5 days in prison. They had gone to support Mzia Amaghlobeli after her initial arrest. Their detention caused chaos & a stampede, leading to Amaglobeli’s re-arrest

The verdict for detained Georgian journalist Mzia Amaghlobeli has been postponed again, until 6 August. She faces 4–7 years on criminal charges for slapping Batumi’s police chief. Amaghlobeli has to travel 400km to Batumi from Rustavi Prison and back to attend each hearing.

Police official Irakli Dgebuadze, a central figure in the criminal case of jailed journalist Mzia Amaghlobeli, is no longer Batumi’s police chief and is now serving in Tbilisi, the Interior Ministry confirmed after initial reports from Batumelebi.

2/ Who is Mzia Amaglobeli? She was first detained in Batumi on January 11-12 for placing a sticker on a police station wall. Released shortly after, she was arrested again the same night for slapping Batumi’s police chief, after repeated provocation.

Protest kicked of in Batumi against the rigged elections, as a sit-in throughout the night, which then spread to Tbilisi and Kutaisi "out of solidarity".

Other key Georgian news today is that imprisoned journalist Mzia Amaghlobeli won the Sakharov Prize, EU’s top human rights award, for her “courage shines as a beacon for all who refuse to be silenced”.
