Audience Poisoning
The ubiquity of AI-generated slop is bleak, and not just because it seems so many people just really don’t care and are also not great at thinking. It’s not about the lack of will nor skill. Because some people—many people—genuinely cannot tell the difference between effective prose from a writer and plausible words sequenced together by a machine. A lot of people have consumed so much average, mediocre and bemediocre content that the output reads as normal. Will and skill assume people know what good looks like. The “don’t care” diagnosis is might be too charitable for organizations. Companies flooding blogs with AI content aren’t lazy. It’s a rational calculation rooted in economics of a business case, at least in the short term. The problem isn’t that enough people have to care about quality. The prevailing wisdom is that the audience cannot tell the difference. They might be right. That’s bleak.
