I don't know enough about beatemups to know what makes for a bad one so the scott pilgrim ones were always fun, as an example. Never played a classic castlevania other than 64 so Lords of Shadow was fun Mid to me, etc.

These three animes/mangas are what forever shaped my view of what a Fantasy setting should look like (Also, Capcom fantasy beatemups like Knights of the Round and DnD.). I am not a fan of what current day anime do with the outfits and the only new anime I see old school is in freaking Goblin Slayer.

River City Saga: Journey to the West was interesting enough. I don't really like how the roguelike gameplay loop interacts with beatemups as a genre, but what do you do? Well, what you do is find a 2 upgrade interaction that completely breaks the game.

feel like it's also a major factor how the examples that loom largest in western player's minds are the NA versions of konami's early licensed beatemups, which are some of the most unrefined and mean-spirited games in the genre to try and 1CC

this is just cultural, not design wise. obv a lot of shooters and beatemups were designed for that kind of play to be possible. hell, fighters were designed for serious competition and the mainstream of gamers didn't realize that was possible until like 2008

sure the review floating around in question is giving some “beatemups all blend in” particles but like they genuinely cannot be blamed that hard for thinking capcom’s lineup is very whatever. credit feeding or not.

i have played many beatemups, console and arcade. and they can get pretty unique and silly. capcom’s output is not at all the gold standard of the genre just cause they made final fight.

I think part of the issue is that the games people would regularly attempt to 1CC (beatemups & shmups) had already become niche by 1992.
Over the next few years, the American arcade scene transformed into NBA Jam, Daytona USA, and Fighters.

The only Nintendo YouTuber I can think of that comes close to leaving a real impact on people is probably Beatemups, I like his podcast he does on the side of his channel, he seems to really care about it too. It’s a really good time whenever i have it on in the background.

i like the whole core trilogy but that was never released in arcades. Revenge of Death Adder was arcade exclusive that one is incredible.
