after spending abt half an hour with this, i have gathered the following information:
-beatmatching isnt too hard
-the decisions about where to cue and stop each track are like 80% of dj skill
-my drums need to be WAY louder in my tracks
-beatmatching isnt too hard

there's this 8 hour "trance to study by" mix that i've listened to so many times over the years, that i've memorized the few moments where there are minor beatmatching errors... and the original songs sound weird to me without them 😅

Depending on what you're playing beatmatching could be a major component of it or absolutely none of it. But you're right that it's a core skill that you should not be up on stage without.

In 2019 I was the DJ at a Persian wedding.
I've never met a warmer, friendlier bunch of people. Even though I botched beatmatching in 9/8 rather often.
There was a reception the next day, and people I chatted with the night before welcomed me with hugs, like we were old friends from way back.
