Happy 134th birthday to humans knowing that viruses exist! OTD in 1892 Dmitri Ivanovsky presented his evidence of a tobacco mosaic disease caused by filterable agents (not bacteria!). Martinus Beijerinck confirmed this independently in 1898. And voila, virology is born!

Atomic force microscopy (AFM) is a game-changer in virology.

It reveals virus structure, mechanics, and host interactions at the nanoscale, helping design better antivirals and understand viral behavior like binding and assembly.

5/ The final piece of the puzzle came from Martinus Beijerinck and , who noted that only certain (mainly leguminous plants) could grow well in nitrogen-poor soils but others couldn't. They found that plants couldn't fix nitrogen from the air, but bacteria could.

A century of research on Azospirillum and still so much to discover | Plant and Soil
A century of research on Azospirillum and still so much to discover
Background Since the first description of an Azospirillum-like bacterium in 1925 by Martinus Beijerinck in The Netherlands, this genus has become a cornerstone of plant–microbe interactions and sustainable agriculture worldwide. Over the past century, Azospirillum has been extensively studied for its ability to promote plant growth, enhance stress tolerance, and contribute to nutrient acquisition, particularly in cereals and legumes. These functions are mediated by multiple mechanisms, including nitrogen fixation, phytohormone production, and the modulation of the root architecture by effector molecules. Scope This review presents a comprehensive synthesis of the historical and current research on Azospirillum and its impact in agriculture and beyond. It explores its taxonomic expansion, physiological versatility, genetic manipulation, and interactions with plant hosts and other microorganisms. It also examines its agronomical impact on extensive and intensive cropping systems, both individually and mixed in microbial consortia. Advances in formulation technologies and regulatory frameworks for commercial inoculants are discussed, as well as cutting-edge tools such as artificial intelligence and multi-omics integration that are reshaping how we understand and deploy this bacterium. Beyond agriculture, Azospirillum has proven valuable in environmental contexts such as revegetation of degraded lands, bioremediation of contaminated soils, and ecological restoration in arid zones. Its capacity to colonize diverse hosts, survive extreme conditions, and contribute to ecosystem processes underscores its potential far beyond agriculture. Conclusion One hundred years after its first scientific mention, Azospirillum remains not only relevant but also vital. As the world moves toward more sustainable agricultural and ecological systems, this review reaffirms the legacy and promise of this genus.

From viral assembly to host interaction: AFM’s contributions to virology | Journal of Virology
Viruses are a class of pathogens that infect virtually all organisms (1, 2) and were first discovered in 1892 by Ivanovski and Beijerinck (3, 4). Viruses have evolved over millions of years and have adapted to their hosts, existing in constant conflict with the immune system of their host, and, thus, have gained the crucial molecular components to evade detection and facilitate their life-cycle (5). Given this evolutionary arms race, there is a constant need to study viral properties and behaviors for emerging pathogens, new strains, and potential zoonoses, necessitating the expansion of techniques and technologies. Characterization of key aspects of viral biology, such as landing, binding, and entry, can provide critical information relevant to the development of novel therapeutics and treatment strategies. However, the process of virus entry into the host cell through receptors is a dynamic and multi-step process, including binding to numerous receptors such as cellular glycans, lipids, and proteins, making these biological systems very difficult to comprehend (6).
