“Epitaph for a Puritan” — Hilaire Belloc

He served his God so faithfully and well
That now he sees him face to face, in hell

It's an 'homage' to a piece of doggerel by Hilaire Belloc about subjugating Africans.

viz:

Whatever happens
We have got
The Maxim Gun
And they have not

(The dipshit motherfucker can't even count syllables.)

A page from 'Cautionary Verses' by Hilaire Belloc (the poem is 'Aunt Jane'). The illustration is by Nicolas Bentley.

Have political movements stopped producing great literary figures? I was just reading Hilaire Belloc, and while I disagree with basically everything he stands for, the Catholic literary revival can plausibly claim Belloc, Chesterton, Waugh, Tolkien, Lewis, Greene, Merton, Day, O'Connor...

My nominee for
"Least Sentimental Christmas Poem"
goes to Hilaire Belloc's "Lines For A Christmas Card":

"May all my enemies go to hell,
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel."

happy bday French-born English writer Hilaire Belloc, b.1870.

“From quiet homes and first beginning,
Out to the undiscovered ends,
There's nothing worth the wear of winning,
But laughter and the love of friends.”

"It is the best of all trades, to make songs, and the second best to sing them."

belloc tells the officer that they're doing it bc it would be embarassing to them all if they open it in front of hitler and nothing happens. presumably the film was to be sent express to berlin. my take was that belloc intended to use the ark's power for himself and double-cross the nazis

H. G. Wells and Hilaire Belloc, their muscular bodies ready for a kaiju battle over religion, natural selection, and human evolution. The twin frontispiece to Wells's Mr. Belloc Objects to "The Outline of History" (1926).

RFK:

We’re ending the Nanny State.

Hilaire Belloc:

And always keep a-hold of Nurse
For fear of finding something worse.

a thing I had totally forgotten is how the nazis build a film set for the ark opening ritual, nobody even explains this in dialogue I don’t think and it makes the denouement all the funnier, belloc in his spirit halloween high priest garb and the nazis still in uniform

Per Hilaire Belloc in 1898, in mood just as grim and murderous (though nowhere near so scaled-up): “Whatever happens, we have got / the Maxim gun, and they have not.” 😡
One of Elon Musk's most cryptic posts says this: "Whatever happens, we have got the spaceships, and they do not."

We decode this here. It's a serious statement about the future he actually envisions:

“Louis the Sixteenth cannot have been the dolt the world has always supposed him to have been, for he took a lively intelligent interest in the balloon.” What a sentence!!!
