#Benthamidia
Flowering dogwood (Benthamidia florida or Cornus florida) are nice landscape trees, but they are adapted to forest shade. In open landscapes, the leaves tend to wear out, curl up, and drop without much color. The fruit, though, is always spectacular.

It’s blooming season for the only Cornus species left in my town, if you have accepted the generic reclassification of dogwoods.

Flowering dogwood (Benthamidia florida, synonym Cornus florida) is one of our most iconic southern native trees. A medium-sized tree, it achieves a wide, graceful shape under the partial shade of tall neighbors like pines and tuliptrees (Liriodendron tulipifera). (1/2) #nativeplants

This one is a two-fer: good fall color and fruit! This is flowering dogwood (Benthamidia florida, formerly Cornus florida). In addition to beautiful spring flowers, this small tree has fruit for the birds and outstanding fall color. This native tree is a real winner for small yards. #nativeplants

Lol, apparently flowering dogwood is now in the genus Benthamidia

Today’s picture is the big, wide, beautiful shade leaves of a little dogwood that I hope will prove to be the native flowering kind (Benthamidia florida, formerly Cornus florida), that has been growing underneath other young trees in the area I was clearing today.

I know! (I should have mentioned that the photo isn’t mine, I’ve planted one of these but no blooms yet).

Ugliest binomial would be another interesting contest…maybe something from genus Glandularia or Benthamidia (both of which sound like diseases to me)

…after all that, I hope it really does turn out to be the native flowering dogwood (Benthamidia florida, formerly Cornus florida, and not a kousa (B. japonica)!

A little background on today’s photo:

We have a number of little dogwood seedlings popping up, and for years I assumed they were all native flowering dogwood (now Benthamidia florida, but the Flora of Virginia still has Cornus florida) because I knew the first one was.

While pulling Japanese honeysuckle the other day I accidentally yanked this dogwood (Benthamidia florida, formerly Cornus florida) up by the roots. Stuck it in old potting soil as a short term fix & got it in the ground today.

Gah! The little dogwood volunteer I’ve been nurturing the last few years has just bloomed for the first time… revealing itself to be a kousa (Benthamidia japonica) rather than a native flowering dogwood (B. florida). Anyone know how to ID them when small/only leaves to go on?

Also, if you hate Benthamidia/Swida, wait until you hear about Chamaepericlymenum canadensis (aka Cornus canadensis)! Just rolls off the tongue, doesn't it? *laugh*

I'mstarting to get used to Benthamidia!

I'm still getting used to the new name: Benthamidia florida.
