A vertical color woodblock print in the ōban format, titled Evening in Beppu (Beppu no yu) (1929) by the Shin-hanga master Kawase Hasui, masterfully evokes a tranquil and moody twilight atmosphere in the famous hot-spring town. Part of his celebrated series “Souvenirs of Travel, Third Series,” the print utilizes a rich, deeply saturated palette of moody indigos, slates, and dark teals, punctuated by a few warm points of light. The composition musters a poetic feeling of solitude, prioritizing the complex textures of nature and the heavy, cooling air of the oncoming night. The foreground is dominated by a cobblestone pathway running along a dark stone retaining wall down the lower-left field. Rooted firmly at the edge of this wall is an ancient, sprawling deciduous tree, entirely bare of leaves, its thick trunk leaning out over the landscape. Its massive network of intricate, fine branches stretches horizontally across the middle of the frame, acting as a delicate, silhouetted screen that partially veils the background scenery. Below and to the right of the wall, a textured rocky shore or shallow riverbed drops down, revealing wet, stony terrain cut by narrow, glistening trickles of water. In the middle distance across the water, the low, shadowy silhouettes of traditional village houses and ryokans huddle along the shoreline. A few scattered windows glow with a warm, soft yellow light, hinting at quiet life indoors. Rising majestically behind the village is a large, triangular mountain peak, rendered in a solid, dark teal silhouette that contrasts sharply against a lighter horizon line. The sky above is heavy with textured, low-hanging clouds rendered in varying shades of slate grey, suggesting a cool, overcast evening. Hasui’s vertical black calligraphic signature and round red artist seal are stamped clearly in the bottom-left corner of the pathway, anchoring this beautifully moody landscape.
