Berlioz's Requiem

As a special treat I'm attending the Seattle Symphony's performance this afternoon. They're playing Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique, which is one of my favorites. Program music for the win!

This is a great photograph!

I'd love to hear Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique played with 3 of them one day.
Here’s the massive, magnificent but very rare Octobasse, invented in 1850. To play it, the musician must stand on a platform. You can hear its rather alarming deep bass tone, and see it being played, at www.youtube.com/watch?v=12X-...

"Peace in ourselves, peace in the world."

Alain Altinoglu and Frankfurt Radio Symphony perform the sublime opening of Hector Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique, composed in 1830.

Pure, transcendent beauty.

Symphonies pride themselves over who has the best set of bells which are basically only used in Berlioz's Symphony Fantastique.

I was so elated to hear them in Dallas a few years ago.

Now listening to Berlioz's Symphonie fantastique recorded by Eduard van Beinum in 1951. One of many electrifying performances in the Decca box set, including a 1946 recording of the same piece.

#NowSpinning Karajan’s 1970s version of Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique. I liked the first three movements of his pretty 1965 account, but found the rest lacking in tension. How will this version of ten years later fare? Lovely cover art!

Tired but happy horn section after playing Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique with the Sinfonia of Leeds. What a wonderful piece - a true concerto for orchestra, every player getting a chance to show off.

#FavouriteDiscs One of my favourite moments in the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s Complete DG Box is this thrilling account of Berlioz’s La Damnation de Faust. Ozawa lets the orchestra rip through it with stunning results, but it’s McIntyre’s nasty Mefistofeles that steals the show.

I think some classical critics are getting increasingly annoyed by conductors holding multiple prestigious positions simultaneously

Where is that sense of foreboding required by Berlioz’s semi-autobiographical drama of a suffering artist in love? Gone missing

Very sad to hear that conductor John Nelson has died. A Berlioz specialist, his concert performance of Les Troyens in Strasbourg was one of the greatest musical experiences of my life. RIP 🌹

There’s nobody on the planet who’s conducted Berlioz’s epic opera The Trojans more than John Nelson.
