#books
Who has reviewed indie books and big five books, queer books, books by and about people of every race, people who are neurodivergent, and has elevated those things to a national platform.

TRUE FACT: Olivia's books save bees!!!
Fun fact: a bookseller once told me they recommended this novel to a reader, who read it, and then later had a swarm of bees appear in her yard. She recognized what they were doing and was able to contact an apiarist and get them rehived! Books about bees save bees!

Books! Books! Books! Books!!!

To be clear, it wasn't that we didn't HAVE books, growing up. What we did not have was FICTION.

I moved out and was like "Imagine just BUYING A NOVEL" and my parents were like "... That's nice, dear????? But why??"
what is a satisfying purchase as an adult
for me it was realizing i could just buy candy at any time
There is no adult purchase less satisfying than new tires.

Honestly in shock.

@nytimes.com terminated the contract of romance fiction columnist Olivia Waite because she reposted on Bluesky criticism I and @markjacob.bsky.social had of the paper’s lack of coverage of the new rape allegations against Donald Trump.

Details and a statement from Olivia here:

This is completely a me problem, but I hate that books are marketed as a list of tropes. I bet the books are great! I just find them disincentivizing. Just deflated my enthusiasm.

Why are the books I don't want so cheap and all the books I want so expensive?

Year three of being “the book house” in our neighborhood. Gave away 200 books, a bunch of chapter books, middle grade, and YA for the teens that came through. Makes me happier than I can say. ❤️

I also give out candy too, relax.

She used that platform like a scalpal to raise up the profile of indie books and queer books and books by authors of color, and to give them tools that FOR BETTER OR WORSE the publishing industry still valued.

It sucks that they do, but pretending they don't didn't help anyone.

I've been publishing books for young readers for 23 years. In the past three years, there's been a huge change. The discourse is fraught. Now I am regularly accused of being a "groomer" a "pornographer" and a "pedophile." For writing kids books. It's horrible. And nonsensical. And not okay.
