#Bernuthsfeld
In May of 1907, two brothers found a skeleton while cutting peat in a bog in Lower Saxony, Germany. Fearing finding murder evidence, the brothers buried the body again, but it turned out to be the body of the Bernuthsfeld Man, a 7th/8th century man who was wearing a gorgeous patchwork tunic.

Analysis of the tunic confirmed that the different fabrics show evidence of wear from previous uses.

More about the Bernuthsfeld Man.
The Bernuthsfeld Man's tunic is really a rather special affair - a very, very simple cut, but it is put together from only patches. It's not a heavily worn tunic that was patched up.Most publications ...

Justerjûn nei Museumnacht yn it Fries museum west foar de Redbad-expo.

In moaie fryske skiednis, dy fan kening Redbad.

In Lower Saxony c. 600-900 a man died and he was wearing what may have been the shittiest piece of clothing of all time. A tunic stitched together from random bits of cloth.

Instead we get assumptions: e.g. the Bernuthsfeld man's patched clothing is read as ritualistic (why?), Redbad is presented as regulating sceatta coin circulation (how?), and having a hand in founding Danish Ribe (what? how? when?) 3/6

The 'Fleecy Frisians' exported their famous Frisian cloth (Fresum) from salt-grazing sheep along the Waadsee from the 5-6th c. if not earlier. It made for comfortable clothing and weatherproof sails

I used an early medieval tunic discovered near Bernuthsfeld as an inspiration here

On that note, I learned about the Bernuthsfeld tunic as a reenactor, and you couldn't ask for a better illustration for this

This certainly was a considerable expense, but there seem to be a lot of people treating clothing as if it cost an entire years' wages and most people went around in heavily patched together garments which isn't true. Tunics like Saint Francis' or Bernuthsfeld aren't the norm.
