so there is actually a semi common device that powers things by actually creating electrons

it’s a betavoltaic cell, they were invented in the 1970s to power pacemakers which need to run for many years, and are still used in a few places

every other power source is just pushing electrons around

Fascinating possibilities: diamond battery that lasts thousands of years?!

A diamond battery has been developed that converts carbon-14 radioactive decay encapsulated in a diamond into electricity, in similar manner how light is converted into electricity in solar panels (betavoltaic effect).
First-ever diamond battery could last thousands of years
"Diamond batteries offer a safe, sustainable way to provide continuous microwatt levels of power," a researcher said.

City Labs launched "the world's first nuclear-powered satellite" into space last week. Kinda cool! Worth noting that it's a tiny cube, four inches on a side, that uses betavoltaic panels - semiconductor sheets, like PV panels - to catch electrons and positrons from a tiny bit of radioactive tritium.

As long as there is greed, we will lose this cause. The betavoltaic has been tested successfully and could power most of our lives. But alas, there is no money in selling a battery that lasts a lifetime.

Unlike traditional space reactors, BOHR carries a compact betavoltaic battery using tritium decay to generate power without sunlight—ideal for lunar nights or deep space.

Crucially, it's the 1st commercial nuclear satellite cleared through the FAA's 2019 review pathway. 2/4

To tide everyone over until I finish this other big thing. A 20 gauge sporting coilgun-shotgun designed by Radion. Powered by a somewhat bulky betavoltaic battery and tending to pulverise small birds, it still sells well just for the fun of it.

You can buy a tritium-powered betavoltaic battery off the shelf for about $5k. You can buy a cubesat launch for about $10k.

Startup testing nuclear battery technology in orbit
WASHINGTON — A Florida startup has launched what it says is the first commercial demonstration of a nuclear-powered satellite technology, testing a power source that could allow future spacecraft and autonomous sensors to operate for years without relying exclusively on solar panels or conventional batteries. City Labs said its BOHR (Betavoltaic Orbital High-Reliability) cubesat lifted off July 7 aboard SpaceX’s Transporter-17 rideshare mission, marking the first in-orbit demonstration of the company’s NanoTritium betavoltaic power system. The mission is designed to determine whether the technology can generate electricity independently of sunlight over extended periods, potentially expanding the range of missions that can operate in deep space, permanently shadowed regions of the moon and other environments where solar power is limited. The demonstration, partially funded by NASA and Pentagon contracts, reflects government interest in alternative space power systems to keep satellites and distributed sensor networks operating longer in contested environments. While radioisotope power has been used for decades on NASA’s deep-space probes, commercial companies have largely stayed out of the field because of technical, regulatory and safety hurdles. City Labs specializes in betavoltaic batteries powered by tritium, a radioactive isotope of hydrogen. The devices convert the energy released through radioactive decay directly...

So, if (top/bottom 12 x 4) seems like there are 48 x p100b modules. If we use the nominal value of 2Ci from p100a then that's 96Ci or ~10mg of tritium.
