Betony is in the Underdark and Shar keeps appearing to her. Her party members are not a fan of Shar or deities in general. For Bets, the gods of a place are like the acidic soil at the roots of azaleas, or the bog that fosters pitcher plants. They are terrain. It is important to know them.

This morning: an 'unsightly' patch of wildflowers outside our house...but wait, if you look carefully you can spy three goldfinches taking seeds.

HH is my favorite place to visit in our part of the state. They've got a bit of everything there. They opened up the new area just a couple years ago. I love the restored wetland. Great plants along the south side of it. Scarlet paintbrush, greater fringed gentian, wood betony.

I love these moments when something good I‘ve never heard of unfolds in front of me; it‘s like stepping through a gate into something exciting. Spotting flowers that are new to me is one such example.

Swamp betony (Pedicularis lanceolata), a hemiparasite of wet spots, attaches to roots of other plants using special organs called haustoria
As a hemiparasite with chlorophyll, it uses a combination of photosynthesis, root acquisition, and robbery to acquire its resources (nutrients, water, sugar)

Even 'precious' species such as Betony (Betonica officinalis), and Dyer's Greenweed (Genista tinctoria subsp. tinctoria) react as if they've had a fancy new hair cut.

Florida betony(Stachys floridana), a Florida native, is in the mint family (Lamiaceae) & has the typical square stems with opposite leaves along the stems and lavender flowers. It’s native to all of Florida. And its tubers are edible! Read: greengardeningmatters.blogspot.com/2026/01/flor...
