#BetterWithoutBillboards
Big digital billboards can emit 11 homes' worth of energy and cause harmful light pollution - but local authorities aren't allowed to take this into account when deciding whether to allow them to be built. This week I called for this to be changed #BetterWithoutBillboards @adfreecities.bsky.social‬

Congratulations to @adblockhackney.bsky.social for another local WIN!!! 🥳 Our streets are #BetterWithoutBillboards & we can work together to make sure they stay that way 💪
Success! This distracting and pointless digital adscreen, proposed for Stamford Hill, right opposite Stoke Newington Station, has been rejected permission on the grounds of public safety and detriment to the character of the area!
Thanks everyone who objected!

It was great to be at the launch yesterday of @thetcpa.bsky.social report with @playingout.bsky.social & @dbornat.bsky.social We submitted evidence on the impact of outdoor advertising on children & young people in their local areas. Looking forward to next steps #BetterWithoutBillboards

Great news in #Oxford where a local campaign highlighting that ads on a dangerous roundabout were not welcome has been successful! 🥳 #BetterWithoutBillboards #AdEnough
Oxford City Council has withdrawn its application to show advertising boards at the Plain roundabout. The previous permission had expired, and the application for renewal was widely criticised on safety grounds. The withdrawal means there is no legal permission for continued display of adverts.

This fear mongering & misinformation from industry lobbyists must stop & the Government must introduce wide ranging advertising restrictions, including on ALL outdoor advertising, to protect the public health of everyone in the UK #advertising #PublicHealth #BetterWithoutBillboards #Adenough

You are on fire @adblockhackney.bsky.social 🔥- keeping pavements & public spaces for people & nature not corporate ads! Communities don't need energy hungry, pavement blocking ads promoting consumerism & products that are bad for people & the planet - our neighbourhoods are #BetterWithoutBillboards
Another useless digital advertising board blocked in #Hackney. This time on the corner of Kingsland and Richmond Road. 🎉

Amazing work from @adblockcardiff.bsky.social 🥳People power can stop more digital billboards in our cities - all our communities are #BetterWithoutBillboards
🥳 SUCCESS! 🥳

Some nice news with which to end the week. Those big proposed ad screens which we objected to, above the #Butetown Tunnels? They've been WITHDRAWN following our objections... 💅🏻

Ever wondered why poorer suburbs always seem to have more billboards and ad screens than richer suburbs?

Great discussion in this episode of the #BetterWithoutBillboards podcast (link below) from @adfreecities.bsky.social... [1/2]

Fascinating stat from the new #BetterWithoutBillboards podcast via @adfreecities.bsky.social - it really does invite the question of why we allow advertising which normalises ever-bigger, more polluting and more dangerous vehicles on public roads.

Three dilapidated billboards in east Bristol have got us thinking about how the space could look different.

What would you rather see instead of corporate advertising?

More applications for ads in #Cardiff - if you live, work or play there support @adblockcardiff.bsky.social by sending in objections to show that these neighbourhoods are #BetterWithoutBillboards
Two more proposed public advertising sites for you to oppose, both of them in #Grangetown... Get those objections in, folks!

Addressing the commercial determinants of health is a big part of addressing poor community health. Fast food & betting shops on your high street & more outdoor ads selling you unhealthy products creates an unhealthy environment & increases inequalities #BetterWithoutBillboards
"Too many people continue to live less healthy lives because of where they live - meaning that they are denied the opportunities to thrive that we all deserve"

Health inequalities are holding back entire communities. This has to change. 💭👇

New episode! Just like cigarette advertising, let's ban SUV ads...

...and then let's ban SUVs.
"Should SUV Ads Be Banned?"

Adfree Cities, a UK advocacy group, successfully got a Toyota Hilux SUV ad that shows drivers ripping through natural areas and cities taken off the airwaves and streets.

Hear how they did it and what's next in our new episode.
