It is a book excerpt: Dim lights of a laundromat barely lit the shadowy sidewalk. The sign above remained lit up. A closed sign hung on the door. Empty washers and dryers sat with an eerie quiet, the usual hums and whirs and beeps absent near midnight. Emily followed the man after stepping off the bus at a nearby stop. To anyone else, she was merely a woman with shoulder-length, red hair, wearing a simple black t-shirt and blue jeans beneath a black winter jacket. An excerpt from the book "Beyond Cover 1: Diamond Gamble" by Lavinia Thompson. Dwayne set the gun down to exchange it for the whiskey bottle hiding beneath his bed. A few shots to take off the edge. Tired of thinking, and feeling, for that matter. He closed his eyes, longing to be somewhere other than that room. The solitude of the mountains. Forests. Not even a street light or skyline in sight. Dirt roads. Endless, longing for restless souls to discover them. A crackling fire in the night. A wide open sunrise outside of his old cabin. Someday, he at least wanted to see that once more.

With a shrug, Ruslan refilled his glass. “It appears so. They keep saying we encroached on their territory, we take their business, we interfere with their things. I say get rid of them. Every single one. Problem solved.” Ruslan’s eyes remained stone cold as he sauntered back to the table where they sat. Emily crossed her legs under the table and tried not to shudder at the subtle malice in Ruslan’s tone. “I know my father is ready to go off on them,” Kazimir said. “Ultimately, it’s up to him.” “I just worry about your brother in such a war. His bloodlust is insatiable,” Ruslan said. Emily cast a quick glance to Dwayne, who sat back and cleared his throat without saying anything. He crossed his arms across his chest and briefly met her eyes.

They’re not homicidal maniacs. Chances are, they’ll take their diamonds and skip town with the breakout of a gang war,” Dwayne said. “True,” Emily replied. “Okay. Only thing I can think of is to talk to the woman following us. I think she’d be our in with them.” Dwayne nodded. “I agree. Let’s get some damn sleep before we do anything else. No use trying to function on fatigue.” “Sounds good,” Emily replied. The kettle clicked off. She put a lavender flavored teabag into her mug and added a touch of honey as Dwayne shuffled into his bedroom and closed the door.
