The cartographer/artist Eduard Imhof was a genius! 🥰🗺️🖌️

He not only mapped mountains, but modelled them! 🏔️

In 1938/39, he created the Bietschhorn model (1: 2,000) for National Exhibition in Zurich. After renovation (2005), it is now @ethz.ch

Can you spot a glacier that's just made a big splash?!

Comet R3 is brightening rapidly -- will it survive? C/2025 R3 (PanSTARRS) has been slowly brightening and extending an ion tail since its discovery last year. This shedding mountain of dirty ice puts on its best sky show this month, though, because it passes its closest to both the Sun (April 19) and the Earth (April 25). The featured image, showing R3 already sporting a tail extending over 10 degrees, was taken two nights ago from Sion, Switzerland with the big mountain Bietschhorn on the left. Comet R3 will be visible during mid-April before sunrise. Although the future brightness of any comet is hard to predict, the brightness of R3 makes it already a good camera comet and it may become visible to the unaided eye in the next week. Comet R3's physical future is also unknown because, like Comet A1 (MAPS) earlier this month, it may disintegrate when it passes its closest to the Sun. Or it may live to leave the Solar System.

El cometa R3 está aumentando su brillo rápidamente, ¿sobrevivirá? C/2025 R3 (PanSTARRS) ha ido aclarando y extendiendo una cola de iones desde su descubrimiento el año pasado. Este desprendimiento de hielo sucio ofrece su mejor espectáculo en el cielo este mes, al acercarse más tanto al Sol (19 de abril) como a la Tierra (25 de abril). La imagen destacada, mostrando ya una cola que se extiende más de 10 grados, fue tomada hace dos noches desde Sion, Suiza, con la gran montaña Bietschhorn a la izquierda. El cometa R3 será visible a mediados de abril antes del amanecer. Aunque es difícil predecir el brillo futuro de cualquier cometa, R3 ya es un cometa ideal para cámaras y podría volverse visible a simple vista en la próxima semana. Su destino físico también es incierto, ya que, al igual que el cometa A1 (MAPS) señalado anteriormente, podría desintegrarse al acercarse al Sol o podría continuar su viaje saliendo del Sistema Solar.

Erster Abbruch geht schon ins Tal: Riesiger Felssturz droht: Alpen-Ort wird evakuiert
Am fast 4000 Meter hohen Bietschhorn in den Schweizer Alpen löst sich ein Felsvorsprung, 1,5 Millionen Kubikmeter Stein gehen ins Tal ab. Die örtlichen Behörden fürchten den Abbruch von noch viel mehr Gestein. Ein Ort wird vorsorglich evakuiert.

Permafrost ist selbst auf diesen Höhen nichtmehr so wie es mal war.
1975 wurde Permafrost für NW-flanken ab 2400m als Wahrscheinlich angesehen.
Starke alpine Erwärmung in den letzten 10Jahren gemessen.
