In this case, everything you might want to know about Chipping Norton, from Domesday to David Cameron for @vchlondon.bsky.social.

And now, tea.

The latest preview of work towards the first of what we call a 'Topographical' #BigRedBook for the county of Herefordshire. #Skystorians #LocalHistory #Ledbury

This fascinating preview of our next #BigRedBook on Yorkshire's East Riding shows how we can connect the built environment with the documented history of a region, in this case, the Yorkshire Wolds at Nunburnholme. 🗃️
The church of St James, Nunburnholme (East Riding) may look a bit on the ordinary side but it houses several symbolic mysteries, such as the imagery of its famous Anglo-Scandinavian cross pillar. But VCH East Riding Vol XI (in press) had to deal with another, its eccentric tower arch. 1/5

Today is the day (probably the first of at least two) I spend sorting images, numbering, and captions for the next @vch-home.bsky.social #BigRedBook (this will be our 253rd).

Not my favourite task, but hugely worthwhile.

In the meantime, the teapot is full, and there are about to be biscuits. 🗃️

Excited for another #BigRedBook focused on #Pocklington in the East Riding of Yorkshire! #LocalHistory #OnePlaceStudy It’s not #Rillington but it's close. 👍😀
Right.

That's TWO @vch-home.bsky.social #BigRedBooks submitted to our friends @boydellandbrewer.bsky.social in the last few days, one for the East Riding of Yorkshire, focused on the town of #Pocklington, and the second for #Oxfordshire on the area to the south and west of Chipping Norton. 🗃️

This work has come about in support of the research and publication of a milestone book for us: our first for Westmorland and our 250th #BigRedBook which will be published by @boydellandbrewer.bsky.social in the autumn.

Some of our archive has had a little TLC thanks to our @ihr.bsky.social intern, Madison Luckey.

These before/after pics show how she's taken some rather battered and badly wrapped (in 1908!) research notes for Westmorland and rehomed them in lovely new envelopes and custom boxes.

#ICYMI - we are celebrating the publication of our 250th #BigRedBook, and our first publication for the historic county of #Westmorland.

In September we had an event to mark this and to place the volume in the context of the series and to showcase the extraordinary work behind it. #Skystorians

Happy New Year (again) from @vch-home.bsky.social!

The latest #BigRedBook (number 250), details the town of Towcester, defined by its Roman origins and place on Watling Street/Telford's coach road and later being bypassed by the M1.

Huge thanks to all involved.
What’s this? A second new book in two days?

Towcester Hundred is the eighth VCH volume for Northamptonshire, including the town of Towcester and its rural neighbours.

As well as being a fantastic book from VCH Oxfordshire, this is also a personal milestone for me as it’s the first #BigRedBook I’ve been part of the editorial team for. Always a pleasure to work with @adamchapman.bsky.social - thank you for the editorial advice!
A treat for us is the arrival of advance copies of our latest #BigRedBook, Oxfordshire vol. 21, covering the town of Chipping Norton and its neighbourhood.

We suspect that an author has put this detail in on purpose. It's worked.

Just one of the details - along with huge scale medieval landscape management, the town of Pocklington, and the edge of the East Riding Wolds - will feature in the next #BigRedBook for Yorkshire, out next year. #Skystorians
From today's editing. In Bishop Wilton (inevitably in Yorkshire, @lvhicks.bsky.social):

'An early cricket challenge match for a purse of £20 was played at Garrowby New Inn on 4–5 December 1834.'

Cricket in April is challenging enough. On the Wolds in Advent? Over two days?! Respect.
