It’s absolutely infuriating. I live in uptown because it’s Minneapolis’s most walkable street level retail district. The city decided to shut the street for two years to improve walkability and bikability. The result? Complete business apocalypse. The new street is nice - AND THERE’S NOTHING ON IT.

I’m very pro walkability/bikability, and in fact got into urban planning due to my interests in walkable communities and public transit. Still, it feels a bit strange seeing the terms “urbanism” and “urbanist” completely co-opted by the cycling community. It’s overshadowed all nuance.

I’m not trying to nitpick, but I do think the wording difference in how the Minnesota Department of Transportation thinks about modes of transport—evaluating “risks” for pedestrians and “safety” for car drivers and riders—is telling.

Agree 100% on factoring in the bikability of a commute - financial & in terms of quality of life. I once delayed a decision on taking a job in the arse end of London with a shitty rail commute so I could try riding it. Riding halved the travel time & went via a lot of green spaces. Took the job.

I am impressed at the improved bikability of my seasonal home at Lake Chapala, Mexico (remote working). They recently built some great concrete protected bike lanes. Though I avoid high noon for obvious temperature reasons.

Strava pretends I save carbon ebiking but my alternative is taking the subway not driving a single-occupancy gas-powered SUV
(the car trip would be basically impossible because of the subway-oriented land use of the neighborhood I chose to live in for its bikability to the Manhattan job market)

For those who live in countries/even US states with amazing public transport and bikability, you all will never understand why cars and access to them are a huge part of America. Sadly (Yes, even as a v8 guy) until things change we are stuck in this paradigm. Electrics still are not cheap/

The corridor is set for a BUNCH of really great improvements in the next decade. BRT will mean much better transit, improvements to walk and bikability are already underway, EWALD PARK
