Houston’s key bike lane on Austin Street has been blocked by construction—with no warning and no detour. BikeHouston is calling out the city and says it violated its own rules on closures.

Irony: sitting in 8 solid lanes of traffic on I-10 trying to get downtown to attend the flagship fundraising event of Houston’s biggest mobility advocacy group (BikeHouston) because it’s too far to bike in a suit & commuter trains simply don’t exist.

"I could meet with them 100 times and it wouldn’t matter.” Houston Mayor John Whitmire recently told Houston Landing that he can't be bothered to engage with local organizations (like BikeHouston) which advocate for better transportation options.

BikeHouston's executive director said he believes Houstonians support more cyclist infrastructure -- not less. His comments came the day after Mayor Whitmire criticized the backlash from cyclist & pedestrian advocates over the Austin Street bike lane removal.
BikeHouston director critical of Mayor Whitmire’s removal of bike lanes
Houston's cyclist community has continued to push back against Houston's removal of bike infrastructure in the city. BikeHouston Executive Director Joe Cutrufo says Mayor Whitmire has a “moral obligation” to ensure that residents are safe, regardless of their mode of transportation.

The Westpark Dr bike lane is a little cleaner today - we shoveled a TON of mucky mud and leaves out of the lanes and collected buckets of sharp & ugly objects littered everywhere.
Big thanks to #BikeHouston for organizing & the volunteers who came out to lend a hand!

Took a lap of west Houston on my day off.
Found:
-3 bike counters; 2 on Brays & 1 on Westchase near Arthur Storey
-the bridge connecting Brays to Westchase trail is truly impassable now, & the detour down Wilcrest & Bellaire Blvd SUCKS
-great weather
-lots of people on the trails
