Two things: one institutional, one petty
Institutionally, I don't think we can understand Henrich without seeing its relationship to the fraught bioanthro/cultural anthro split, particularly at Harvard.

One of the prevailing pop culture myths about bioanthro is that humanity were persistence hunters. Fortunately for us, the archaeological evidence instead indicates our hunting advantages were sociality, toll use and strategy. We were *intelligence* hunters.

One thing that has stuck with me from intro bioanthro is that even the
primates that evolved to eat mostly fruit have to supplement their diets with either insects or leaves.

To say nothing of humans.

Which field? 🤣

Forensics/bioanthro: We really can’t accurately sex a human skeleton as well as ppl think.. Humans have too much variety. The best an ethical CST is gonna tell you is 'ennnh, 80% certain."

Author/writing: Traditional publishing is corporate. They don't care much about story or YOU.

Almost all of the bugs and problems and breakage in the software you use is known to the engineers, we just aren't allowed to fix it. Gotta ship new features.
What is common knowledge in your field, but shocks outsiders?

The number of parents that don't care much about their kids and/or have very thinly veiled resentment against them is much higher than most people think.

My daughter spent two summers in Tanzania, part of her BioAnthro degree at Indiana University. She befriended a Maasai tribesman, Ole Kipa. She promised to paint his portrait and send the money when it sold. It sold for $5,000 dollars, money was sent, and he bought some cows! 😀

When Peter Ellison (bioanthro) became the most prominent faculty member to call for Larry Summers's resignation, he highlighted that Summers—NOT Ellison—was trying to foment division between them: "I like what you guys do. I don't particularly like what they do"

Laughter didn’t start with stand-up comedy. Chimps, bonobos, and even ancient humans cracked up too. Joy is in our bones—and maybe our guts. #PaleoPost #BioAnthro #HumanOrigins #WOPA #AncientJoy

Didn't we all grow up with Kanzi in learning and teaching bioanthro.
RIP
Kanzi the bonobo has sadly passed away. You can follow the link to find out more about this incredible primate. I feel lucky to have learned about him in my undergraduate "Apes" class & to have held a Skype virtual meeting with Kanzi and his other ape friends at Ape Iniative. RIP handsome. #Primates

Bones are not passive structures. A new evolutionary study shows how shifts in locomotion, from life on land to bipedalism, reshaped the molecular systems that let bone sense and adapt to load. #HumanEvolution #BioAnthro #Paleo www.anthropology.net/p/when-bones...

I love my job and the company I work for. The products we make save lives every day. I get to use all all of my CIS, Archival, BioAnthro, and Historian skill sets and then some.
I get to do a lot of really fascinating, fun things.
And I'm learning new things every day, even six years later.

And if my dim memories of bioanthro serve, walking upright on 2 legs is just bad design. Our spines did not get optimized. Wheels, multiple teeny-tiny legs, four equally long limbs, there's so many better ways to move through our environments!

From bioanthro/forensics? We really can't sex skeletons anywhere near as firmly and accurately as people think. The best any experienced skeletal person is gonna say, if they're ethical, is being? 80% possibility of (sex).

From writing? Traditional publishing is abusive AF to marginalized writers.

In some states, the right to an appointed attorney, "if you cannot afford" one, made famous by the Miranda warning, is not guaranteed for misdemeanor charges, even when the defendant ends up serving their sentence in prison or jail.

Federal judges may sentence someone based on alleged conduct related to uncharged crimes and crimes for which the jury returned a not guilty verdict. See US v Watts (1997).

There are some good areas of bioanthro but few and far between. My undergrad anthro class (not at Harvard lol) didn't get into this, but there was a lot of ultra adaptationist stuff. And my prof talked about the evolution of women's bodies in a creepy way. He got great course reviews 😬

Warmer temps, heavier owl monkeys: Climate linked to weight gain in primates
A Yale-led study finds that Azara’s owl monkeys have gotten heavier as temperatures rise — a result that defies long-standing expectations about how animals adapt to warm climates.

I studied bioanthro in college, and the most reassuring thing I got from it was “different cultures raise their kids a huge variety of different ways and they all turn out basically fine”
