WE DON'T NEED PETROLEUM-BASED PLASTICS ANYMORE!

"The [bamboo plastic] outperforms most commercial plastics and bioplastics in mechanical and thermo-mechanical metrics while maintaining full biodegradability in soil within 50 days and closed-loop recyclability with 90% retained strength."

Plant-based plastics could help reduce the millions of tonnes of medical waste hospitals generate each year
Bioplastics can be made out of natural fibres such as bamboo, hemp, plants or algae.

Forget AI, what is tech justifies the hype? My pick: bioplastics. Here, WashU's engineers optimized PLA so it can degrade at room temp and is much stronger! Plus we can feed it with our ag waste! I want petrochemical plastics gone and this is the way! 🧪🌱🍎 #AgSky source.washu.edu/2025/07/leaf...

As we try to move away from petroleum-based products, the concept of plant-based plastics (bioplastics) is becoming more popular. But that doesn't mean we won't likely make the same mistakes with waste management practices. 🧪

Industry says that they do. But a growing number of studies suggest that actually they don't.

One researcher I talked to,  Sarah-Jeanne Royer, (who unfortunately did not make the story ) compared it a little bit to bioplastics.

Most bioplastics only biodegrade inside of an industrial composting facility. Royer and her colleagues studied the effects of placing natural materials, conventional materials and polylactic acid, a common bioplastic, in seawater.
