#Biocomplexity
If we were able to grasp the transformative potential of biodiversity – specifically how it relates to biocomplexity – how might we change our behavior?
In this episode, Nate is joined by ecologist Thomas Crowther to discuss the critical importance of biodiversity as an intricate web of life that supports all other living beings, not just through the sheer number of species, but because of the complexity of interactions within ecosystems.

Fascinating results. All you need to evolve multicellularity is smashing single cell archaea together! From an ALife/biocomplexity angle, it speaks of how critical it is having a dynamic self-organising substrate-representation to evolve complexity

Tissue-like multicellular development triggered by mechanical compression in archaea
The advent of clonal multicellularity is a critical evolutionary milestone, seen often in eukaryotes, rarely in bacteria, and only once in archaea. We show that uniaxial compression induces clonal mul...

I’m a scientist who studies microbes & biogeochemistry in the oceans. I document how microbes cycle materials in the ocean. Those little ‘bugs’, as we call them, keep Earth habitable. I seek to understand how those microbial engines are adapting to this changing world. #resilience #biocomplexity

This was one of my favourite episodes yet.

So much potential to empower people, ensure justice, and bring back biodiversity (biocomplexity) through convivial ecological restoration.

Answers to most of our current predicaments are already available if people would just engage and work together.

I can’t find anymore where I read the suggestion to replace the term #biodiversity by #biocomplexity… It fully makes sense (but maybe one doesn’t like it because it feels like a surrender. Anyway, it still makes a lot of sense!)
I just heard about an academic at a small university in the US, whose NSF grant application was rejected because the AI bot that scans it caught the word 'biodiversity' and of course we can't have any 'diversity'.
This grant proposal deals with biodiversity about 300 million years ago............

Virginia’s social distancing measures are slowing the spread of COVID-19, per UVA modeling, which also projects that cases could exceed capacity at Virginia hospitals without further mitigation.By @kamamasters

New models show social distancing working in Virginia, but cases still could exceed hospital capacity • Virginia Mercury
Virginia’s social distancing measures are slowing the spread of COVID-19, the disease caused by a new coronavirus, according to a new model from scientists at the University of Virginia. But the model, presented Monday by state health officials and researchers from UVA’s Biocomplexity Institute, also projects that case numbers will eventually exceed the surge capacity […]
