💧 🌱 I started my Sunday visiting the Westwood Greenway which is newly open to the public.
Back in 2011-2012, I worked with community members to save this 900 ft long “paper street” from becoming an asphalt parking lot.
Birds 🐦, Butterflies 🦋 & the biofiltration creek make it a very relaxing spot

4/X But what would clean the water? Biofiltration, sure. But also decreasing the number of cars on the road. Reducing the development impact elsewhere in the Puget Sound watershed and concentrating it in existing urban areas. The very things she's fighting.

A two-year study by SCCWRP reveals that biofiltration #stormwater BMPs remove ~72% of #microplastic particles from runoff. Engineered media in biofilters - used to trap sediment, nutrients, metals - also work well for microplastics - a multi-benefit intervention!

2/X So how do we get the water to flow from a roadway onto the grass/trees? In urban areas, often through a curb cut to a small trench. Biofiltration basin, in the lingo.

Is that what our musician friend is proposing? No, they just want to preserve existing tree canopy.

Gah. I have an outbreak of "Fish TB" (really mycobacteria), untreatable with antibiotics. Lost 3 fish so far. Ordered a UV water sterilizer. I've been told might help by cutting down the bacteria in the water column. It won't affect my biofiltration, especially since I run undergravel filters.

"The naturally treated water consistently contained no E. coli bacteria... It also removed 85% to 95% of the ammonia and phosphorus that pollute rivers and dams."

Aquariums like @seattleaquarium.bsky.social or even our own #zebrafish facilities require biofiltration like these bio balls to keep our water clean and safe for the animals. It requires close monitoring of water chemistry and parameters to make sure these essential organisma can do their jobs.

When designed in 1995, the Wetlands were meant to receive and treat backwash water from filters in the new Reclaimed WTP.

Water was split between two treatment trains that send water through an initial settling basin, then to a larger polishing basin, before finally flowing to the recharge basins.

Arriving at the biofiltration ponds the warm sulphur geosmin smell is dominant, with sweet scatolic notes.

As the path turns west between tall shrubs into a grove of alder, fir, and cedar, the sulphur aroma fades and light florals return, complemented by wafts of green astringent herby IBQ.
