Soft robotic enteroscope offers a new approach to small intestine examination
An innovative robotic device inspired by snake movement could someday help gastroenterologists diagnose and treat inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and other disorders of the small intestine and remove small polyps while reducing trauma to the organ's delicate tissues. Developed in part by Binbin Ying, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Internal Medicine in the Division of Digestive and Liver Diseases at UT Southwestern Medical Center, the bioinspired soft enteroscopic robot (BIOSENTER) prototype successfully navigated small intestines in preclinical studies and demonstrated the ability to perform real-time imaging, tissue biopsy, and localized fluid delivery. The findings were published in Science Robotics. While this remains early-stage, preclinical technology, we're encouraged by its ability to navigate challenging intestinal anatomy and perform procedures that are essential for diagnosing and treating disease. Our long-term goal is to develop robotic tools that can help clinicians examine the small intestine more safely and efficiently." Dr. Binbin Ying, lead co-first author of the study and member of the Chemistry, Biomedical Engineering, and Cancer Research Program, Harold C. Simmons Comprehensive Cancer Center The small intestine is about 20 feet long and tightly folded with slippery mucosal lining, making it one of the most difficult organs to access and...

Bioinspired robot airdrops into remote waters via morphing wing-sail
“Fall like a maple seed, sail like a boat” sounds like advice from legendary heavyweight boxer Muhammad Ali. In reality, it describes a new robotic platform scientists have created for fast, long-term deployment to monitor remote waters. Researchers at the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) have developed what they call ALBATROSS, short for Airborne Lander with Buoyant AuToROtating Sailing Sensor; a nature-inspired, concept robotic platform that can be deployed from an aircraft over remote waters, land in water, straighten itself, and then sail autonomously using wind energy. The researchers say future deployments of the current prototype would be able to remain at sea for weeks at a time, monitoring environmental conditions. Monitoring remote locations in the wide open sea presents a unique problem. Boats and other watercraft can traverse a desired area for extended periods, gathering the required data. However, they may take a long time to travel from the deployment point to the desired destination. Aircraft, on the other hand, can reach a destination relatively quickly but cannot stay on station nearly as long as their sea-borne counterparts. The researchers' proposed solution combines the best of both worlds. “Surface systems are useful because they can remain at...
