Folks, we are entirely dismantling health, research, and now biothreat intelligence
“The move, dubbed ODNI 2.0, is the latest effort by the Trump administration to slim down the federal government, and comes after a wave of top-level departures at the ODNI’s Cyber Threat Intelligence Integration Center earlier this year.”
Gabbard to cut ODNI staff by nearly 50 percent
Lawmakers are divided on the plan, which would eliminate hundreds of roles and save the ODNI more than $700 million annually.

The hantavirus is *probably* not something to worry about. The state of America's public health infrastructure is. ICYMI @citizencohn.bsky.social:

Not sure who needs to hear this, but you can’t have an effective “biothreat radar system” (pathogen early warning system aka biosurveillance) if you decimate the CDC (capacity for detection, data analysis/dissemination, and response).
Sincerely,

Yet another reminder that rampaging through the government going "What does this thing do? Looks useless! Get rid of it!" is profoundly unconservative as well as damaging to the stuff of governing.

They talk about “biothreat radar.” It doesn’t exist yet, although it’s a great idea. The funding has not been approved by Congress. It’s a line item in the 2026 President’s budget…

At the same time, scientists are perplexed by what the administration IS doing for pandemic preparedness. It put $500 million into an old vaccine platform that was abandoned for good reasons.

And the budget bill proposes the establishment "Biothreat Radar Detection System". 🤔

RFK Jr. penned an op-ed in the WSJ about his efforts to ‘restore public trust’ in the CDC, where he mentioned a “Biothreat Radar Detection System,” which he described as an “advanced early-detection tool” that can spot pathogens circulating in communities early.

If you talk to people who work in public health, you will pick up a clear level of concern. It’s not simply because the spread of any lethal virus is, quite rightly, a reason for them to be vigilant.

Because Trump had the U.S. withdraw from the WHO, these sorts of communications must take place quietly and often through backchannels—an approach that public health experts told me is slower and clunkier, and can mean key information never gets conveyed.

It seems pretty clear Donald Trump thinks about global health the same way he thinks about other global issues: As a contest for supremacy among self-interested nations, rather than as an opportunity for cooperation.

Not the right time for that.
