Merlin is a great app, but can I put in a word for the BirdNet project (also Cornell), and especially BirdNetPi, which passively records and identifies birdsong 24/7. We've had one for 6mths and have been astounded at the number of species we have in our garden! app.birdweather.com

Just blowing here.
Playing havoc with my BirdNetPi setup as the microphone is just a conferencing mic more suited to an office desk than glued to the underside of a soffit.
You need to set a birdnetpi system up. NI's a bit devoid.

BirdNET-Pi, mentioned in the video, is incredibly cool! You leave this thing outside, it records everything and picks up and categorizes apl the birds it listens to. All free software, running locally on cheap single-board computers

Imagine my excitement: a Common Scoter detected on my #birdweather #birdnetpi system. Sounded just like one.

But no, it was a toad. It's mating season: brrp, brrp, brrp...

Moral of story: the microphone shouldn't be near a pond even if you're looking for ducks.

If you leave your #BirdNetPi -equipped van in the airport parking lot, it mostly hears a different sort of bird.

There are also Barn owls here making spooky noises occasionally, but the Tawnys are loud. The female has a habit of sitting in the eaves above my bed and calling. Often. At 4am.
