Ever since the dawn of time, the birds have followed the Sun. In spring they follow the season to the north; in fall back to the south. The Sun gives them warmth to lift their wings, leaves to hide them from predators, and countless green caterpillars to feast upon in the branches of maple and walnut. In the early days, the Redstart was a plain and busy bird. She wove cloaks for all the others—threads of leaf and water, sparks from fires, and petals from golden wildflowers. To the cardinal she gave crimson, to the bunting deep indigo, to the parakeet shimmering green, to the finch bright gold, and to the oriole blazing orange. But she wove nothing for herself, too busy with her work, her feathers remained dull brown. One spring, the Sun looked down upon the great migration. The forest was bright with cloaks, every bird glittering like living jewels in the treetops. The Sun asked, “Who has dressed you so finely?” and all the birds answered together, “The Redstart.” Then the Sun saw her: the little Redstart, dull and drab, clothed in olive with a grey head. The Sun said, “You have given beauty to all others, yet none for yourself. Take these.” And it laid across her shoulders threads spun from pure sunlight, bright as fire at dawn. With them she wove her own cloak, at last. That is why the daughters of Redstart carry golden sparks on their wings and tails, and the sons burn brighter still, flashing embers in the dark forest as they hunt.
