Managed a spot of #BirdingByTrain research on today's walk via Higham station. A 20 minute stroll thru' farmland to the edge of the marshes, then out to the Thames..
(Today's lunch-stop a rainy one on the beach.)

For me, this was 5 stops from home for under a fiver. No complaints.

Couldn't resist direct train to Poole to reacquaint myself with the Forster's Tern! Great to see on the deck after the fleeting views past patch 3 years ago. Maybe it'll return? 🙏 #LowCarbonBirding #DorsetBirds
Group of gulls and Terns on wooden posts. They all have white underparts and grey wings, and varying arounds of black on their heads. One Tern is a vagrant Foster's Tern and had a black eyemask and some dark streaking on its otherwise white head. It had orange legs which stands out from the nearby black legged Sandwich Terns, and a black bill that is conical. Same group of birds but the Forster's Tern has turned around to show pale grey upper parts and even paler primaries. Train arriving at a platform. There are benches on each side of the flatform. The train is mostly grey and dark blue. It is a small station with a bridge linking the 3 platforms. It is overcast. The information board for the platform with train says "Weymouth and..."

At my recent talk, told "But when you go #BirdingByTrain you only have a camera, never a heavy 'scope and binoculars".

So, made today an 'all the gear' walk from Ramsgate station to harbour.

Signs said 17 minutes. Just how long did this overweight pensioner take? 17 minutes. Yup that'll do ☺️

I had to fight for today's lunch bench, but it was the only one for a km.
This hogger didn't want to share, and as soon as I'd finished he was back on and swearing at me.

In distance, the white of an old quarry cut into the North Downs. Looking back after lunch, and the Stonechat has reclaimed HIS bench.

Today's #BirdingByTrain research was testing/timing some #Medway estuary routes around what I call 'Callum Ridge'.

Just found nice read online, Swale Council Local Landscape Designations, inc. their name for area: 'Lower Halstow- Iwade ridge'. Mine's better😇

Excellent! Mine a route march as I've had fixation on my explorations being train only last 2 yrs, but if plans for aiding local RSPB group get some #BirdingByTrain trips in 2026 pan out, might be adding in buses a bit😉

Out y/day #BirdingByTrain w/ ol' chum Trev, who'd never got off at Swale station before.

Just needed to stroll a km each way along Swale for Trev to be impressed w/ birds/ insects/ habitats on show. (Then we both needed to fit in our much-needed old person afternoon nappy-naps. Seawall bliss😉)
Trev looking back toward Swale station (train arriving at platform, top left under Sheppey crossing road bridge). 2nd quietest train station in Kent, deep in the north Kent marshes, Kingsferry marsh immediately to the west, Ridham marsh immediately to east. Chitney fleet, western end of Kingsferry marshes. A scattering of wildfowl and waders. Waders on Horse reach, West Swale. (The Kingsferry seawall path carries on out here.) Trevor, power-napping on the Ridham seawall.
