Eastern Bluebird gets in an early morning wing stretch atop a dead tree in the marshes at Lake Betz, in Morrisville, North Carolina. The bird is perched at the top point where the tree trunk broke off. Its feathers are white on the lowers belly, transitioning to orange for the chest and throat, and then to blue for the head, wings and tail. It has its wings about halfway out. The extreme telephoto lens used for the shot has smeared the background in impressionistic blurs of green, brown and light blue.

Red-Bellied Woodpecker sticks out its tongue as it goes for an insect hiding under the bark of a tree in the Sandy Creek Environmental Park in Durham, North Carolina. The woodpecker has a red crown of feathers running from the top of its beak over the eyes and down to the shoulders. The rest of the head is white, except for some orange around the beal. The wings are black-and-white checkerboard, and the chest and belly are white that gains orange and red accents and some black spots as you get to the legs and tail. It's clinging to a vertical tree trunk which is pock marked with holes from previous visits from woodpeckers hunting insects.

Double crested cormorant eating catfish, Haw River, Jordan Lake Dam Tailrace, NC. The cormorants head and part of its neck are above water, the body is mostly submerged. The cormorant has the catfish, which is thrashing vainly, firm gripped in its beak, head first, preparing to lift its head up and gulp the fish down. The late afternoon sun and sky are reflect on the water. Water droplets are flying around the bird's head from the struggle.

A yellow-crowned night heron slowly stalks prey through the swamp in the Sandy Creek Environmental Park, Durham North Carolina. It is walking through a thick bed of water reeds. One foot is raised above the reeds as it carefully and deliberately moves to minimize disturbing its prey. Vertical frame, heron is facing right-to-left across the frame. Its body is gray, and the head, from throat to top is striped: black, white, black (surrounds the eye), and white. The eye is orange. There are flowering yellow flag irises in the background that are much taller than the heron.

The next generation of tree swallows gets started. Sandy Creek Environmental Park in Durham, North Carolina. The swallows both have brilliant blue backs and heads, with black patches around the eyes and white underbellies. This is a vertical image. The female tree swallow is perched on a branch that comes in from the middle right of the image and then curves down and exits the frame just to the left of the bottom center. She's being pushed forward by the male swallow, who has mounted her from behind. The male swallow's feet are on her wings, his wings are extended as he's rapidly flapping them to stay in position as he mates, and he's used his beak to grab ahold of feathers atop her head to help him keep position. This has the effect of pulled the female swallow's head up and back a little.

A Green Heron tries to make up its mind about where to go next in the marshes of Lake Betz in Morrisville, North Carolina. The heron is standing at the end of a log, with it back to the camera. It feet are splayed out in opposite directions and it's looking off to its left as it surveys the marsh. The head feathers are black with white around the yellow eyes, and red at the throat and chest, except for a white path running down the very center of the neck and to the chest. The wings are black with bluish hints.
