Originally recorded in archives in 1595, the Kirbister Farmhouse, located in Birsay, Orkney is the last un-restored traditional 'firehoose' (firehouse) in Northern Europe.

The episcopal canonisation of Magnús Erlendsson (†1117) probably took place #OTD in 1135 at Birsay, Orkney. Vilhjálmr/William, the islands’ bishop, had the earl's remains exhumed and enshrined at Christ Church, Birsay, later to be translated to Kirkwall. 📸John Comloquoy #medievalsky

The Stane o' Quoybune on Birsay in Orkney. Probably erected in the later Neolithic, around 2000 BC, the stone is one of several solitary standing stones that can be found in Orkney. 📸 My own. #StandingStoneSunday #Prehistory #Archaeology #Orkney

The Stanerandy Stones, near Birsay (Orkney). In a mystical haze that may or may not be sunscreen on the camera lens. I waded knee deep through buttercups to reach them, so was sneezing a lot in that moment #StandingStoneSunday
