Should you plant trees you’ll never benefit from? I believe so. At 68, I likely won’t see the pine kernels harvested. Yet, in the second weekend of December, we’ll be planting six pine trees on the mountain in Biscoy (Ibi).

These are my Christmas trees this year. Just planted six pine trees (Pinus Pinea) on an empty terrace on Biscoy (Ibi). It will take a very long time before the first pine nuts can be harvested. No problem!

Biscoy/Ibi: There are over 50 largely unused terraces. Constructing bunds is essential to reduce water loss (due to erosion) and support the growth of trees. On this terrace, we plan to plant additional olive trees to enhance its productivity.

Ibi/Biscoy: The downy oak (quercus pubescens) seems like a nice tree for the mountain. Several downy oaks have already been planted. I found this downy oak in the summer near the airport of Gerona.

Hellroot (Orobanche minor) is a common parasitic plant on the mountain of Biscoy ( Ibi). This one here was found on a deserted olive-terrace.

The absence of larger predators makes hunting in the mountains necessary. Without hunting, the undergrowth in the forest would disappear completely. Our hunters are actively helping to make Biscoy an ecological paradise again.

Cork oak: (C suber) thrives in acidic soil. While the soil on Biscoy (Ibi) is alkaline,
I plan to plant three Cork oaks in a natural depression in the landscape, surrounded by P. halepensis, to take advantage of the acidic environment created by the fallen needles.

While I enjoy the beauty of the forest on Biscoy, its composition is quite monotonous: mostly Pinus halepensis. Thankfully, there’s rich undergrowth.We’re now planting diverse oak species to boost CO₂ sequestration and improve water retention

Despite decades of extreme drought, some plants have managed to survive. A striking example of such a survivor in Biscoy ( Ibi) from wetter times is Colchicum Automnale. This plant demonstrates that conditions were once more favorable and provides hope for the restoration of the ecosystem.
