GNU software doesn’t have the best track record for backwards compatibility. I’ve had to deal with two bits of nonsense in my work project upgrading from Yocto 4.0 to 6.0. The old Yocto version won’t work on Ubuntu 24.04 or newer because GNU tar 1.35 gives weird errors in the bitbake environment.

Alternatively, you can run Yocto inside Docker using Ubuntu 22.04 as a base image. I remember someone telling me that Yocto won’t let you run it as root so you may have to create a user before you can invoke bitbake.

What I was trying to make sure I'd gotten right when upgrading the Linux kernel config from 5.15 to 6.18 which Yocto "simplifies" by making an entire repo of nested kernel config fragments that apply on top of each other based on BitBake environment variables. Yocto merges several layers together.

Whatever they changed in tar might’ve been for security reasons because the latest Ubuntu 22.04 security update to tar 1.34 also has this issue, which was fixed on the Yocto/BitBake side in 5.0 (and possibly in a later 4.0 update I don’t have, idk).

The other issue was with the “efitools” recipe.

Bitbake is a huge Python-based build system used by Yocto, which is a bit like Gentoo Linux but for embedded systems. You write recipes that define variables or add custom build steps, all of which run inside the cross-build environment it sets up, with no network access unless you ask for it.
