Bitlayer's Bitcoin smart-contract system, BitVM, is being implemented by major mining pools, including Antpool, F2Pool, and SpiderPool, which control 31.5% of the network's hashrate. This development will help ensure its operation on the Bitcoin blockchain. BitVM enables complex smart contracts to be deployed on the Bitcoin blockchain without changing the base protocol. The implementation aims to allow Bitcoin to flow through decentralized finance systems and layer-2 networks. Antpool CEO Andy Chow believes this expansion will drive more network activity, generating additional transaction fees and revenue opportunities for miners. Mining pools play a critical role in the adoption of BitVM implementations, as they determine the inclusion and validation of new types of transactions and scripts at the consensus layer. With 31.5% of supporting hashrate, developers can build functional systems, assuming that BitVM transactions will be processed, despite some latency. A Bitlayer representative stated that they have a contingency plan in case collective hashrate support weakens or policy shifts occur within Bitcoin Core. The plan includes expanded mining pool partnerships to keep onboarding more mining pools.
