Another medieval woman - the Viking warrior woman of Birka BJ581.

And most other weapon graves in Scandinavia look very different to Birka Bj581 even if we were to accept the latter as a warrior. Taking one case (if a warrior is even what BJ581 is) and extending it to an extremely diverse and variable phenomenon is poor funerary archaeological method

Birka grave #Bj581 continues to reverberate in scholarship (see e.g. the latest issue of Viking and Medieval Scandinavia, where it crops up in two articles). There are some very thoughtful reflections on how it all came about in this paper by Andreas Nyblom direct.mit.edu/books/oa-edi...

A really good read. And gives some insight and historical context for the occupant of Bj581. There's been a lot of pushback since they discovered that the occupant was, in fact, a woman, because *gasp* she was buried as though she were a military leader. I know. Preposterous! Outrage!

Femina by Dr. Janina Remirez does a good job at covering the feminine side of the Middle Ages, which is often overlooked, though it does cover people and events outside of England such as the Birka grade Bj581.

The question of whether weapon graves can be interpreted as warriors (regardless of sex/gender) is a huge debate in early medieval archaeology more widely. One issue with the reaction to Birka BJ581 was not being aware of that. Skre does cite some of the major objections to such interpretations but

Women have been warriors across the world and throughout time. There’s the Birka bj581 woman, reports from Byzantium of Norse women in armor and with weapons being found on the battlefield, and burials of Scythian and Sarmatian women with weapons and battle injuries.

That's amazing! Which one is BJ581?

Other finds like the sword from Bj581 are compatible with a 10th century (but not an 8th century date) as I understand. Of the items illustrated here, I think only one of them could be from Bj581, not the buttons or textiles, just the cap mount looks like the one from that grave.

it feels a little outdated as I published first in 2019 (Matthias Toplak translated it into German), but I got this nice invite from the students who run the journal while I was caring for DND, and this was all I felt I could rustle up at short notice www.academia.edu/126902303/A_...
