Jarena Lee was the first African American female public preacher in America. Born in February 1783 to free black parents. She preached out of her home and throughout the north and south to both Black and White people.

The 2nd Morrill Act created Land-grant Institutions for Black students in states that wouldn't allow access to White institutions. It designated a set of HBCUs to receive federal funds for teaching, research and Extension. There are now 19 land grant HBCUs. #hbcu #1890landgrant #blackhisorymonth

Todd Duncan originated the role of Porgy in Porgy & Bess. He also sang Unchained Melody for the movie soundtrack (before the Righteous Brothers). He taught voice at Howard and in his basement studio at 16th and T…a basement studio that eventually became my first apartment in DC! #BlackHisoryMonth
