YVONNE WELLS is a quilter who after 45 years of quilting has finally started getting the recognition her art deserves! Her quilts are idiosyncratic, storytelling, abstract, unexpected, charming, energetic, full of movement. #Blackabstractartists for #Blackhistorymonth

Then there are the absolutely transcendental & iconic abstract works by NORMAN LEWIS that suggest, imply, refer to humans gathered together like these two: “Title Unknown (March in Washington)”(1965) & “Carnivale II” (1962)

MARK BRADFORD refers to his art as “social abstraction” meaning abstract art “with a social or political context clinging to the edges.” That he is Black and gay is not incidental but integral to his art. 6/n

In 1972 ALMA THOMAS was the first Black woman to have a solo show at the Whitney. The museum had come under a fair amount of criticism for its neglect of Black artists. The solo show was a huge success & has become legendary. ‘Mars Dust’ (1972) was shown 5/n

GERALD JACKSON has had a long career - 6 decades & counting! Over that time he has been prolific in not only painting but also fabric arts, mixed media, poetry. He has recreated himself/his art times over. #blackabstractartists #blackhistorymonth

Formalist abstraction is used to describe the work ODILI DONALD ODITA paints. He creates space through repetition & disruption, shifting hues, reversing shape, adding diagonals. The utopia of formal abstraction is at once successful and failed. 2/n

TAFA FIADZIGBE (known often as “TAFA”) describes his painting as intuitive - the work revealing itself to him over time. This is how I often work so there’s a strong resonance for me even in just viewing TAFA’s work. 2/n

The abstraction in JULIE MEHRETU’s work creates space for improvisation and wild imagination, much like jazz music does for Black musicians, even while abstract painting is most often thought of as a white man thing. Which is why

FRANK BOWLING is a Guyanese-British artist whose time in NYC in the 60s & 70s contributed to an art world pushing towards anticolonial modernism, valuing innovation and materiality of the paint but also rooted in geographies. 1/n #blackabstractartists #blackhistorymonth

I really love BEAUFORD DELANEY’s mark-making in his abstract works. Like the best jazz pieces- sometimes they swoop, sometimes repetitive, often loose and colorful, they fill all the space available & seems to want to be even more. 2/n

ODILI DONALD ODITA is today’s entry in #Blackabstractartists for #Blackhistorymonth. His geometric abstractions are immediately captivating and draw you inexorably into his world of abstract painting. His use of color and form, challenging expectations at every turn, are masterful. 1/n

HALE WOODRUFF was painting abstract works at same time as he taught at NYU. Many of his works during the 1950s gestured toward natural phenomena - as in ‘Gathering Storm (Blue Landscape)’ - by appealing to emotions evoked & invoked rather than realism

One of the reasons I do artists for #BlackHistoryMonth is that it constantly teaches me about artists I don’t know. Today that’s MELVIN EDWARDS. I’m shocked because I did #BlackAbstractArtists last year & he didn’t come up! These are from his Lynch Fragments series.
