The blackpill is that the populists were just racists with union cards.
I’d say that there were three kinds of China hawks from the 80s on—the racists, the liberals, and the populists. Populists outnumbered the other two groups until racists surged during Biden and Trump 2.0. Worth noting that many racist China hawks today were racist China *doves* before Covid.
Basically, what we have here is a situation where you had China hawks and race war hawks and it turns out the latter outnumbered the former about 30:1 and them not realizing this fact was kinda loadbearing for the entirety of traditional establishment national security thought.
