The magnificent Odeon Theatre was awash in deep red light as Blackwater Holylight quietly took the stage, easing the audience into their distinctive blend of doom, shoegaze and psychedelia. Dispensing with unnecessary theatrics, the Los Angeles quartet allowed layers of guitar, understated rhythms and ethereal harmonies to establish the mood from the outset. Their sound unfolded patiently, built on dense textures and hypnotic repetition rather than sharp contrasts. The guitar and keyboard ebbed and flowed through waves of distortion while the rhythm section provided a steady foundation, creating an enveloping backdrop for the band's intertwined vocal lines.
